He was born in Madison County, 1 CONC Florida, in 1848. He was the tenth of eighteen children of William J. 1 CONC and Feraby (Overstreet) Langford. 1 CONT 1 CONT When the war between the North and the South started, his older brothers 1 CONC (John, Leroy. Silas, Frank, and George) enlisted, as early as April of 1 CONC 1861. His father is also said to have assisted, perhaps in the cow 1 CONC cavalry. Cab was the last of of the boys old enough to provide some 1 CONC much needed help on the farm, but he must have felt compelled to do what 1 CONC he could for the Confederate cause. There is a family legend that Cab 1 CONC walked barefoot from Fort Meade to Atlanta, arriving there shortly before 1 CONC the final onslaught of the city by the Union forces; when he saw his 1 CONC older brother, Captain George R. Langford, the brotherly advice was that 1 CONC he should turn back immediately for home, and his "momma" - - that the 1 CONC danger of death or injury was great, and there were enough Langfords in 1 CONC it already. 1 CONT 1 CONT Cab, still barefoot, walked all the way back to Fort Meade, the round 1 CONC trip taking about 30 days. His pension application states that during 1 CONC the year 1864 he joined the Bradford County Home Guard at Lake Butler, 1 CONC under Captain Joseph R. Richard, in the Company of Capt. J.J. Dickison. 1 CONC He was sent with the unit to the Battle of Missionary Ridge in Tennessee 1 CONC but was sent home because he was young and too small for service. He was 1 CONC sixteen years old. 1 CONT 1 CONT Cab's mother, seeking a safer place to reside, while her husband and 1 CONC older sons were away, had traveled about 200 miles south to the Fort 1 CONC Meade area of Polk County. After the war, most of the boys and their 1 CONC father came to the new home near Ft. Meade and remained in the area, 1 CONC marrying and raising their own families. 1 CONT 1 CONT Cab married Meddie Lightsey on March 19, 1876 in Polk County and remained 1 CONC in the Fort Meade area. He farmed and raised cattle. He served one term 1 CONC as Polk County Commissioner and eventually went into the real estate 1 CONC business in Fort Meade, and together with one of his sons, built a nice 1 CONC brick store building there in 1907. His letterhead proclaimed him as a 1 CONC dealer in "Phosphate, Timber, Fruit and Vegetable Lands", with a line in 1 CONC smaller type: "Correspondence Solicited" - - this in 1908. 1 CONT 1 CONT In 1908 he submitted an application for a pension based on his 1 CONC Confederate Military service. At the same time, he included a letter to 1 CONC the officer in charge, in which he advised: "I should like it entered on 1 CONC your books (without pay until applied for) fearing as I do, that if all 1 CONC who are entitled to pensions under the law, draw them, it will cut short 1 CONC the funds for such an extent that poor widows and orphan children who are 1 CONC depending on their pensions for a living, would suffer." On June 19, 1 CONC 1921 Cab filed, at age 72, a Soldier's Pension Claim, which this time was 1 CONC approved and he was paid the small pension believed to be about $60 per 1 CONC year. He died on March 14, 1922, and was buried beside his wife in 1 CONC Evergreen Cemetery, Fort Meade. 1 CONT 1 CONT He is described as a very friendly man who enjoyed company, and was very 1 CONC hospitable. 0 @I08@ INDI 1 NAME Meddie E. /Lightsey/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1 NOV 1860 2 PLAC GA 1 DEAT 2 DATE 9 AUG 1911 2 PLAC Polk Co, FL 1 FAMS @F2@ 0 @I09@ INDI 1 NAME Josephine Russell /Langford/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE MAR 1877 1 DEAT 2 DATE 14 OCT 1949 1 FAMS @F3@ 1 FAMC @F2@ 0 @I10@ INDI 1 NAME Curtis /Langford/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE FEB 1879 2 PLAC Polk Co, FL 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1930 2 PLAC Polk Co, FL 1 FAMS @F4@ 1 FAMC @F2@ 0 @I11@ INDI 1 NAME Charles Walter /Langford/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 24 NOV 1881 2 PLAC Polk Co, FL 1 DEAT 2 DATE 4 FEB 1944 1 FAMS @F5@ 1 FAMC @F2@ 0 @I12@ INDI 1 NAME Bernice R. /Langford/ 1 SEX F 1 ALIA /Brucie/ 1 BIRT 2 DATE JUL 1883 2 PLAC Polk Co, FL 1 FAMS @F1@ 1 FAMC @F2@ 0 @I13@ INDI 1 NAME Samuel Hairston /Woods/ 1 SEX M 1 FAMS @F3@ 0 @I14@ INDI 1 NAME Charles /Woods/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1902 2 PLAC Winter Haven, Polk Co, FL 1 FAMC @F3@ 0 @I15@ INDI 1 NAME Lillie Mae /Shockley/ 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F4@ 0 @I16@ INDI 1 NAME Meddie Lucille /Langford/ 1 SEX F 1 FAMC @F4@ 0 @I17@ INDI 1 NAME Josephine Mae /Langford/ 1 SEX F 1 FAMC @F4@ 0 @I18@ INDI 1 NAME Anne Ursula /Johnson/ 1 SEX F 1 ALIA /Annie/ 1 BIRT 2 DATE 22 SEP 1888 1 DEAT 2 DATE 11 JUL 1987 2 PLAC St Petersburg, Pinellas Co, FL 1 FAMS @F5@ 0 @I19@ INDI 1 NAME Richard W. /Langford/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 5 OCT 1909 2 PLAC Fort Meade, Polk Co, FL 1 DEAT 2 DATE DEC 1977 2 PLAC Bartow, Polk Co, FL 1 FAMC @F5@ 0 @I20@ INDI 1 NAME Mary Elizabeth /Langford/ 1 SEX F 1 FAMC @F5@ 0 @F1@ FAM 1 HUSB @I01@ 1 WIFE @I12@ 1 CHIL @I02@ 2 _FREL Natural 2 _MREL Natural 1 CHIL @I03@ 2 _FREL Natural 2 _MREL Natural 1 CHIL @I04@ 2 _FREL Natural 2 _MREL Natural 1 CHIL @I05@ 2 _FREL Natural 2 _MREL Natural 1 CHIL @I06@ 2 _FREL Natural 2 _MREL Natural 1 MARR 2 DATE 5 AUG 1903 0 @F2@ FAM 1 HUSB @I07@ 1 WIFE @I08@ 1 CHIL @I09@ 2 _FREL Natural 2 _MREL Natural 1 CHIL @I10@ 2 _FREL Natural 2 _MREL Natural 1 CHIL @I11@ 2 _FREL Natural 2 _MREL Natural 1 CHIL @I12@ 2 _FREL Natural 2 _MREL Natural 1 MARR 2 DATE 19 MAR 1876 2 PLAC Polk Co, FL 0 @F3@ FAM 1 HUSB @I13@ 1 WIFE @I09@ 1 CHIL @I14@ 2 _FREL Natural 2 _MREL Natural 1 MARR 2 DATE 8 JUL 1901 0 @F4@ FAM 1 HUSB @I10@ 1 WIFE @I15@ 1 CHIL @I16@ 2 _FREL Natural 2 _MREL Natural 1 CHIL @I17@ 2 _FREL Natural 2 _MREL Natural 1 MARR 2 DATE 2 NOV 1913 0 @F5@ FAM 1 HUSB @I11@ 1 WIFE @I18@ 1 CHIL @I20@ 2 _FREL Natural 2 _MREL Natural 1 CHIL @I19@ 2 _FREL Natural 2 _MREL Natural 1 MARR 2 DATE 7 OCT 1908 0 TRLR
