MEL GOES FISHING

We had a slow week this week. Our Saturday's charter was cancelled so we decided to go get Mel and take him fishing. Besides, we like to fish, and rarely get a chance anymore. Mel does a lot of fishing but it's usually for fresh water bass.

This is Jack and Amanda's Melvin.
Now Mel looks like any other Chesapeake, but there is something very different about him. Study the picture. Notice anything different about Mel?

Mel only has 3 legs! He lost one to a car accident he had when he was about 4 weeks old.

Amanda has one on, Mel get's excited.

It's a nice fish! For every turn of the crank, the fish strips off 3. Amanda fights and fights only to loose it, when the fish takes advantage of some slack in the line, while her tip is down. Jeez, she was so disappointed. I don't think there is a fisherman out there that hasn't experienced that feeling of loss. Rick gets one on next. I find out how difficult a job he has, captaining the boat and trying to get pictures. I missed him cranking it in, only to get this great action picture and a salt water bath. While cleaning off the camera lense, the fish goes into the box. It was about a 40 pounder.

The weather was beautiful the water crystal clear. We saw 2 turtles, a couple of sunfish and this dolphin (Mahi-Mahi) that kept teasing us, by swimming around the boat and eating our chunks. Our lines were all the way out, and Rick scrambled to get a pole rigged to drop a nice butterfish down to him. By the time he did, the fish swam off. I kept thinking that at least I caught a good picture of it. This is what came out. I relize catching pictures, is almost as hard as catching fish.

We ended up picking up a Mako, in the early evening. There are no pictures of that. I've heard about them, and kept my distance, and couldn't get a good clear shot of him. Mel was going crazy. We had to hold him back. (Mel can't afford to lose any more legs!) Below are a couple of pictures I took of Ocean City as we were entering the harbor. I love being out on a boat at night!

The next picture is the best one I took all day, or should I say day and night.
