Costume Ideas:

Here is an inexpensive costume idea. For a Gypsy Look. Go to your local Thirft or Goodwill store. Pick out 2-3 long prairie style skirts (the kind that were somewhat popular in the 70's) maybe solid in color or with small floral design, and may have some small ruffles. Also pick out a ruffly shirt and several colorful scarfs. When I did this one year I believe the total cost came to under $10. Mix and Match and have fun with it, and add exagerated lipstick and rouge for added touch.

Another Idea we got from the thrift store. Often in them you may be able to find an outdated prom style dress. Add to this a homeade crown and you have a little princess costume.

Look thru your old clothes. Some that you may not have worn for years. If you do not have any you may know someone who does or a thirt store will have some. If you mix and match you can come up with lots of costume ideas. Oversized clothing works wonders for a clown outfit for children, once stuffed with pillows or towels. And older children love the "hippy" look. The more you look the more fun ideas should be able to come up with.

Tips:

Here is a helpful costume tip. If you purchase a costume that comes with a mask. Paint the same design on your childs face with safe face paint. Children often tire of wearing the mask as it gets uncomfortable. Also if you know that it will likely be a cold nite for trick or treating, buy an oversized costume, then put on coats or sweaters on under the costume.

If you choose to take your kids outside for trick or treating. Be sure to add a strip of white masking tape to their backs and on the backs of their shoes. This helps car lights to reflect off of your child so that they may be more visible. Always carry a flashlight. And check all candy over before letting it be eaten. Just to make sure that it is safe. And only eat homade goodies that are from people you trust. And remember, Halloween is supposed to be fun. So make it safe too.

Fun Ideas & Recipes

Ghostly Pops

Here's a fun Idea for handing out candy on Halloween. Take lollipops that are totally spherical. I recommend tootsie roll lollipops. Leave the wrappers on. Take some tissue and wrap it over the lollipop and tie it around the base of the lollipop where it meets the stick, with some colored yarn. Then take a black marker and draw two eyes on the tissue lightly. Now you have Ghostly Pops!

Graveyard Cake

This is an awesome recipe that was sent to me thru an e-mail and its so good I had to add it here. Crush up with a rolling pin, about two boxes of Oreo cookies, mix it with some instant chocolate pudding (no quantities go for enough to bind it together, I usually use one large packet of pudding to two large boxes of Oreo's.

Put gummy worms in the bottom of a square baking pan or casserole.

Find some "caskets" Stovers makes little cardboard caskets with foil wrapped vampires in them. You might also use about 8 plastic coffins with those sweet tarts in the shape of bones.

Place caskets on top of gummy worms. Pour in graveyard dirt. Shape grave mounds over casket, sprinkle with green confectioner sugar crystals (cake decorating section of the supermarket), use yellow sugar crystals, or just white sugar for the walkways between graves.

Make headstones out of Hersheys Cookies and Cream candy bars (break them into little rectrangles and melt the edges to round on a griddle). Use a cake decorating kit to write R.I.P. etc on the headstones (or whatever you want).

Then get some little figures you can buy in a drug store to set on top, such as a park bench with a ghost and a skeleton, a black cat,a small jack o lantern (tiny figures).

Lanterns

Here is a Fun Idea for Decorating. Take a small paper bag, the kind kids use for sack lunches, and draw a design on it such as a you would draw on a pumpkin for carving. Cut out the shapes. On the inside of the bag on the backside of your design glue colored tissue paper that matches your design such as orange. Next line the Bottom of the bag with sand (this is to weigh it down) and stick a small candle such as a votive candle or a potpurri candle. Make several of these and line your driveway or walkway with them and light the candles for Halloween Night.

Fun with Kids

If your kids are anything like mine they can not wait until Halloween. Here is a good project that can be done with them to give them something to do in the mean time. Get a package of contruction paper. Cut out several pumpkins on orange paper, and several ghosts on white paper, and give them some crayons and let them decorate them. If they are anything like my kids this could actually fill up an hours time of creativity. Have Fun with it and improvise. When they are finished display their art work around the house and in windows to add to your Halloween Decorations.
