Maine Lights
I've enjoyed several visits to the state, and I always try to visit at least one lighthouse somewhere along the way.
Portland Breakwater Light, Portland
Portland Breakwater is an example of some of the creative design that appeared in the construction of lighthouses.
Spring Point Ledge Light, South Portland
Spring Point Ledge, a "spark plug" style light, is on a breakwater off Fort Preble, south of Portland Breakwater Light.
Portland Head Light is probably the most recognizable of Maine's lighthouses, appropriate because it is also Maine's oldest, commissioned by George Washington in 1791.
Ram Island Ledge Light, Portland Harbor
This lighthouse is out on a ledge beyond Portland Head Light, and is visible from shore from Portland Head.
This light station, south of Portland Head, origianlly consisted of twin towers. The second tower, and the keeper's house, have been converted to private use. They are easily reached from Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth.
Bass Harbor Head Light, Ellsworth
Bass Harbor Head is one of the most picturesque lighthouses in Maine. Located on the southern tip of Mount Desert Island, it is a frequent stop for visitors to Acadia National Park.
Dice (Dyce) Head Light, Castine
The original lighthouse, now privately owned, has been replaced by a steel tower on Castine Harbor.
Cape Neddick "Nubble" Light, York
The Nubble is one of the most photographed lighthouses in Maine, often considered to be the epitome of New England Lighthouse architecture. For those willing to brave the Maine winter, annually the lighthouse is beautifully decorated for the Christmas season. And for those who are not polar bears, the Nubble celebrates Christmas in July as well.
A short lighthouse (for Maine) high upon a hill, Owls Head light guards the entrance to Rockland Harbor.
Rockland Harbor Light, Rockland
Out on a jetty a half-mile into Rockland Harbor, venturing out to this lighthouse is a favorite walk for tourists and locals alike.
Pemaquid Point sits atop a very rocky ledge, which appears to be a popular summer sunset vantage point. For those who visit during the day, the keeper's house now hosts a museum.
