Rescued Lighthouses

I have had the pleasure of viewing the rescue of two New England lighthouses, Block Island Southeast Light, Rhode Island, and Cape Cod Highland Light, Truro, Massachusetts.

Southeast Light, a massive structure weighing about 2,000 tons, was moved back 300 feet in 1993 to save it from the eroding cliffs of Mohegan Bluffs.

Three years later, the 650-ton Highland Light was moved 450 feet inland.

The Army Corps of Engineers and International Chimney Corp. were involved in the rescues of both structures, which should now stand a couple hundred years more.

Home

Block Island Southeast Light is prepared to move.

Southeast Light crawls the 300 feet to its new foundation.

Highland Light still has land to travel before settling into its new home.
