Backstreet Boys Postpone Tour Launch To Sidestep Hurricane

Hurricane Floyd, which was packing torrential rains and 150 mile-per-hour winds as it approached Florida's coast on Monday (9/13), has forced the Backstreet Boys to reschedule the first two dates of their sold-out North American tour.
The tour was scheduled to open at the National Car Rental Center near Miami on Tuesday and Wednesday, but those dates were rescheduled for Dec. 5 and 6 due to the dangerous conditions, according to venue officials. The tour's next scheduled stop is Sept. 17 in Charlotte. It then heads to Washington, D.C., for shows Sept. 18 and 19.
A statewide state of emergency was declared by Florida Gov. Jeb Bush on Monday, which lifted tolls on state roads to hasten evacuation from the coast and put the National Guard on alert. Tens of thousands of Florida residents in coastal areas were ordered to evacuate their homes Monday, and thousands of others were warned that further evacuations were possible.
The hurricane was headed in a westerly direction on Monday, but it was expected to make a northward turn that would cause the brunt of the storm to remain about 100 miles off the coast of Florida. Still, hurricane-force winds of more than 70 MPH were expected along the coast by Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, Fla.
By late Monday evening, Floyd was three times as wide and already as strong as Hurricane Andrew, which killed more than 40 people and caused more than $25 billion in damage when it struck the Miami area in August 1992, according to the AP.
