There are Different types of tretment available.

The most revolutionary is the newly developed Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (DBT) which, in layman terms, basically gets the borderline to examine specific details of daily life and look at ways that they could have been dealt with differently. It has proven to be very effectove and was developed specifically to treat borderline personality disorder. But since we borderlines are very unreliable with meds and therapy I don't think I would be able to examine the minutia of my mundane little life without becoming more depressed and frustrated, but, whatever floats your boat I say. Treatment success depends with the individual and the severity of the disorder.

This comes from the WebMD website about various treatments available and their success rates. It sorta reads like stereo instructions but it's actually slightly informative. I especially enjoy the part about the poor prognosis. Way to be optomistic guys.

People with borderline personality disorder tend not to be compliant with treatment. However, the following therapy may be helpful in some cases:

Self-destructive behavior may be modified through peer relationships in social and therapeutic environments. Peer reinforcement of appropriate behavior may be successful because difficulties with authority often impede learning. Group therapy can be helpful in modifying specific impulsive behaviors, as peer pressure in the group may restrain rash behavior.

Drug therapy includes the use of mood stabilizers such as lithium and carbamazepine, antidepressants, and low-dose neuroleptics when manic or psychotic features are present.

Expectations (Prognosis)
Borderline personality disorder has a poor prognosis (probable outcome) as noncompliance with treatment is common. However, people with this disorder who make it through their 30's and maintain sobriety, may begin to improve.

Complications:
drug abuse
suicide attempts
eating disorders
depression
