The Rhinos' Boma...

The rhinos' boma, July 1998

This boma was built in September 1997. It is the enclosure in which the baby rhinos are kept at night. This is in order to protect them from predators, as the babies are not yet able to fend for themselves. If not protected, they could be taken by lions, or even a leopard or baboons -- or poachers.

Rhino minders and armed scouts camp outside the boma every night for added protection. If necessary, predators can be scared away with sounds of gunshots in the air, and the scouts have every right to shoot poachers on sight. Poachers are currently not a problem at Tashinga, however.
