Wolves have a very complex vocal system. They howl, whine, snarl, whimper, growl, and even sometimes bark. The howls from which the wolf is famous for, has many meanings. The howls serves as a signal to call others, or to locate members out of sight. It is also a social expression, as well as a greeting to one another. It may be used to define territories. But mostly, I feel, they how just for the joy of it.

If you'd like to try it, (to sound like a wolf,) the howling method described here is very simple. You first must get some "howl power" which is enough air in your lungs that will allow you to produce a fairly long howl that will not break off sharply at the end. Wolves will not respond to howls that break off sharply, they do not like (or it seems understand,) that kind of howl. You must howl in the "wolf way" if you are to ever get a response!

The very first thing to do is to take in two deep breaths that are held for a second while you cup your hands about your mouth and tilt your head back looking up at the sky. Then let loose with a howl that rises up to and then slowly tapers off. After you howl, wait a few minutes. You may get a response. "IF" you do get one, if there are wolves in your area. Human howling does work if done properly. Wolves will howl in response to humans imitating their howling. If there are wolves in an area, they will respond sooner or later to your efforts. But you must be "PATIENT".
