Octopus Launch at Embassy

Another off-beat gig..this was pretty weird compared
to most of the gigs we have played before..! Not only
because it was in Modesto's Embassy (that classy disco
in Jalan Ampang, with dress code and all that crap).
We managed to get this one by hooking up with the
web based entertainment company Octopus.com during
the Much Music recording at Synchrosound, remember?
Check the old news in the news section if you cant!
Anyways, the Octopus people called us and invited us
to join them for the launch of their new english
website at Embassy, and so it was. Together with
three other bands (Seven Collar T-Shirt, Spunky
Funggy and Love Me Butch) the entire hour and a
half slot for bands left the gel-haired, black-
tight-shirt disco animals either with a headache
for the entire week (and one less customer for
the place) or with a life-changing experience
(and also one less customer for the place..hah!)
Anyways, the gig was pretty much like any other
gig, since the people in the moshpit were from the
bands and the friends of the bands and the sound
system was not too different in quality from the
usual underground gigs..in fact, it made us feel
at home! haha! A little disappointing though since
it was organised by a big company like Octopus.com,
but maybe they had their reasons and they couldnt
overspend..we have to be fair to everyone too.
Soundcheck was at 3pm and most of us just hung out
around ampang park or went back home..there was a
gig going on in ampang park at the same time too!
(But we couldnt get inside cause no moneylah, ironic
huh?) Anyways, the first band for the night was
Spunky Funggy, who did five of their songs and had
most of us dancing to their happy tunes on the dance
floor (or is it mosh pit? haha). Right after, Seven
Collar T-shirt came up, and alas, it wasnt fair for
Dzuan and the lot since their music requires good
monitors and not a deafening noise like the one they
got..it was a shame really. The sound guy didnt know
much about mixing live music, apparently. But its
alright guys, we know you guys are hips better than that!
Better luck next time. When our turn came, we (and some
of the people in the place) insisted that the sound was
too loud (we told him during the previous sets but
he didnt seem to understand) and that he had to bring
all the levels down half way..and so he did finally.
The mixing we got was much better than before. At least
you could understand what was going on. So we decided
to try out our new song! (we had only a 15 minutes slot
and we had to squish two songs in it). We played
"things that go bump in the night", the song we
recorded for the compilation a few nights before, and
it sounded pretty cool! Right after, there was a little
misunderstanding cause we were told that Love Me Butch
was not going to be able to play since time ran out,
so we wanted to cut our set short and let them play at
least one of their songs..but the organiser allowed us
to play one more song and still let Love Me butch play,
so we played C-22 "Jungle" Mech, which got a great
response from the people! Once we were done, LMB took
over the stage and performed flawlessly their beautiful
song "Free Fall" and left people asking for more! But time
had run out on the alternative noise for the night and we
just left the place to talk outside for a while before
everyone went back home. Some of us stayed back and danced
for a while before being taken home. Some others just sat
down and chit-chatted the night away. The gig was left
behind as a memory in less time then expected..hehe.
Fun, fun, though.

go back.
