"Sunflowers" (A Villanelle)

Sow sunflowers in the warmth of summer suns
Vestal virgins nodding their heads in time.
Harvest the seeds when the frost of autumn comes.

Melodies that play like fine-tuned banjo strums,
swaying on stalks like dancers in a line.
Sow sunflowers in the warmth of summer suns.

They waltz with the breeze so sweetly when it comes,
Standing alert, their leafy arms entwine.
Harvest the seeds when the frost of autumn comes.

Ice sculptures in snow too soon they will become,
Children of light, wan poems without rhyme.
Sow sunflowers in the warmth of summer suns

Sweet maidens, see how the squirrel hides and runs.
follow him to a tree where winter will be kind,
Harvest the seeds when the frost of autumn comes.

Toasted perfection your seeds will then become,
Though stalks may wither and summer days decline.
Sow sunflowers in the warmth of summer suns,
Harvest the seeds when the frost of autumn comes.
