Hi everyone,
Could everyone who has not already submitted their assignment site to DownEast
for posting please do so (this is strictly voluntary on your part, however it does serve as
an excellent one stop shopping for classmates to see what others have been doing).
The steps involved are:
1) Email DownEast with your home page address, the name/nickname you wish to appear by that page.
2) check out:
http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/scotia/psp/
the site DownEast has so graciously put together so we can all share in viewing each others progress.
It is certainly a great way for people to share ideas and make suggestions to others.
Take care Linda..

TRANSPARENT
Leapin> I think some people were getting a transparent canvas mixed up with a transparent .gif file
a transparent canvas is 16 million .psp file
a transparent .gif file is 8 bit 256 colours or less
and is only transparent in a web browser
not in psp
unless you pick the view transparency
but when you save it turns back to white, or whatever colour the background colour is

NOW VERY IMPORTANT: FROM LEAPIN
"Next weeks Lesson Will require that you have some sort of windows
zip program that will allow you to open decompress .zip files. I have included a
.zip file that contains pictures you can use to try things out that are covered in
the lesson.
If you do not already have a .zip program here are a couple of sites to try.
There are many shareware and freeware programs available, the one I like
best is called WINZIP.

Study Groups

Looks like live session times are firming up. But remember there will be several of us coming and going in #sosstudy, so drop in if you need help and there might be someone (not me-I will be there for help, not to help-hehe) there to help.
Also if you would like to form a study group you may also use #sosstudy. But please let me know so we can post it so all can be aware.
Chats with Leapin will be in #sosstudy at these times:
Friday nights 9 Atlantic, 8pm eastern,7 central, 6 mountain, 5 pacific
Sunday 7pm Atlantic, 6pm Eastern, 5pm central, 4pm Mountain, 3pm Pacific

Teresa will be having a study group meeting in ICQ on
Wednesday   5:00 PST, 6:00 Mountain, 7:00 CST, 8:00 EST, 9:00 Atlantic
And on Sunday at 1:00 PST, 3:00 CST
Her ICQ is 19875694.

jimbird I'd like to start a Tuesday group on ICQ 8PM Eastern Time on ICQ.(5:00 PST)
UIN #10098081 The way study groups work in ICQ is two people form a chat room and then pull all the others into it. Message me when it's time for the meeting and I'll pull you in.
IMPORTANT: You must be marked "Free for Chat" in order to be pulled into a room; after you're in you can change your status to a restricted mode.
The best settings from the menu bar are:
Layout: IRC style
Display: Background-Gray (or Over-ride Format)
People using black or white text would be invisible if you used those colors for a background.
Logs from these chats will be available at Jim's Workboard  http://members.xoom.com/jimbird/index.html

Had a chance to stop in and visit with this group and see some old friends.
Very glad I did- jim and others were very helpful in helping "turn on the light" and I finally got my text in the rectangle box colored in.
Some time it just takes hearing the same thing said ten different ways before it all clicks!
Ok on to the oval.Note to self- Add color # info to html for web page for DE. I hate to find a color I really like and then find out I can't duplicate it later, so I am writing down the ones I like)

Nancy Paint(the name of the list) is now posted at onelist.
Go to http://www.ONElist.com
On the menubar on the left is "Find a List"
Go there and enter Paint in search
Scroll down the list (it's in ABC order) to Paint (I think it's on the 3rd page).
Click on Paint and them follow the instructions to subscribe.
Once you subscribe you will receive an email confirmation.
Later come back to http://www.onelist.com,
just enter via the "user center" option on the menubar.
I've already posted some useful URLs for PSP (I work with it daily and am taking the class for tips and tricks).

I just noticed as I was uploading these gifs that they still aren't finished because they are still huge. I have to go back and fix them to a manageable size. Most were still over 1000k.Too big for a simple little button.

Here is a description of each compression type under .psp file format options:
None: fastest method of saving but creates the largest file size.
RLE: Compresses repetitive information. Gains about 25% compression rate with layered images and is only slightly slower than the "none" method.
LZ77: Achieves the best compression rate. Some layered images will compress up to 75%. It is much slower than RLE compression, but it eliminates the need to ZIP or otherwise recompress files for transportation.
That is directly from the psp 5 manual. Keep in mind that .psp and .psd are the only two file formats that can retain layers information. All layered images will be much larger than a none layered image (that is MUCH larger). It always pays to leave them layered until you are positive all editing is done, or if you plan to use that same image, but slightly changed in the future.
It makes little difference which compression if any you choose. If you have a pentium machine with ample memory the wait time is not that noticible, so you might consider LZ77, but it really is user choice. (Linda)

                  Hi Luzia,

Part of what you found is certainly correct. .jpg is almost always able to produce a smaller file size
and maintain quality, until too much compression is added (this varies from image to image).

Where I would differ is on the .gif not being as effective as .jpg when it comes to solid blocks of
colour. .gif almost always handles solid blocks of colour better which many of the students found
out during the excercise. If you look for instance at your blocks image (the image with the different
colour blocks in it) you will notice that the yellow blocks now look more like sun/gold bars..the
yellow is much much brighter than the original yellow in the image. .jpg was unable to handle the
solid block of color well, .gif would have been much more effective in that instance. Also take
another review of your images in 256 browsing mode, you will see the difference much more
                  clearly at that point.

Additional downfalls of the .jpg is that it cannot handle transparency. If you want a background to
be "truely" transparent you have no choice but to use .gif. You could stick with .jpg and try to
paint the background of the image as close to your web page background as possible, but this
becomes a nightmare on a Web page that uses a pattern as the background. Also as the lesson
states to match RGB with Hex code colours is very difficult at best. The exception would probably
be white and black backgrounds which are a sinch to match. white is white black is black (wasn't
                  that a song??).

Anyway I hope this cleared a few things up for you.

                  Take care
                  Linda.

I have had a problem all along putting an image on a transparent background. I thought I would get it worked out or it would become clear after awhile but not so!

In lesson 5, when you say to copy then paste as new image on a transparent background, I can't get a transparent background. I have pre-set the setting in File/New choosing a transparent background so that when I next past to new image I hope the transparent background will be in effect. No matter what I do, I can't get a transparent background when I paste as new image.
Some help will be appreciated. Doug

Replys to transparency:
Subject: Re: have problem with transparancies Author: Scriby Posted: 16 NOV 1998, 22:27 EST Doug, Just a question. Are you pasting a copied selection or the whole image? If it is the whole image, I think that the background carries with it. I've also found that when I defloat or merge layers the image often defaults to a white rather than transparent background. The solution to that is to reduce the number of colors to 8 bit, then, using white at the background color in the palatte, go to colors>set pallette transparency. It may ask you if you want to merge layers and reduce to 256 colors. Click ok. It will bring up a box with 3 choices. The middle one is set background transparency to current background color or something like that. Mark that one and click ok. Then, to check and see if it is tansparent, go to colors>view palette transparency. Then, when you save the file, save it as a gif since jpeg doesn't support transparent backgrounds. I hope this is helpful. I was having some difficulty with the transparency thing myself. Scriby

Subject: Re: have problem with transparancies Author: Linda Nieuwenstein Posted: 16 NOV 1998 Hi Doug, Is the image you made the selection on 16 million colours? The paste as new image will only put what you are pasting on a transparent canvas IF it is 16 million colours. Take care Linda.

             Hi Soapy,
In the lesson I mentioned being able to download the bonus tubes at the jasc
site. They were there when 5 first came out, try going to the psp download area
of the jasc site http://www.jasc.com and it should be under the area where you
downloaded psp 5. I think it is called the tubes extras file or something like that.

Subject: Layers vs Selection

             Posted: 04 NOV 1998, 19:08 EST

Hi: Linda, when doing a copy/paste, which is better to do? A paste as new
selection, or a paste to a new layer?

I'm doing lesson 4.5. I copied the 6 faces and automatically pasted as a new
selection. Then I saw that you mentioned paste as a new layer. Why? or why
             not?

Subject: Re: Layers vs Selection
             Author: Linda Nieuwenstein
             Posted: 04 NOV 1998, 20:58 EST

             Hi Soapy,

One reason you might want to use layers instead of paste as new selection is
that once a selection is placed in an image and than deselected it becomes a
perminant part of the image. In order to move it in the future you would have to
go through the hassle of selecting it again a selection tool. Or use the Undo
             feature however many times.

Now we were dealing with 6 faces. Let's say you pasted the 1st face as a new
selection (rather than layer) and went on to paste the other 5 as selections.
Now you notice that the 2nd one, plus the 4th one are out of place and need to
be moved. Guess what? You have to go and make a selection from each of
them now, because after deselecting them they became a part of that image.

Had layers of been used, the faces would remain separate and movable
throughout the whole process, thus saving a lot of time.

             Hope this makes sense
             Take care
             Linda.

Hi Kirby!!

If you are using the smart edge mode with the lasso tool, when you double
click to finish the selection it should remove most of the chuncky edging. This
does not always work, it really depends on the complexity of the selection you
          are trying to make.

There are several ways to try and refine your selection:

          1) try using the Shift/Ctrl keys to add/subtrack from the original selection. By
holding down the ctrl key and incasing the pixels you wish to rid from your
original selection, than double clicking it should eliminate the area you
selected second. The Shift key has the opposite effect, it adds to the original
          selection.

          2) You can take the selection you made, the chunky one, and copy it. Than
edit/paste as new image. Now select the retouch brush and pick smudge.
Carefully trace over the edges of your selection, this should give you an
anti-aliased type effect. NOTE: you may have to play around with the retouch
tool settings, like size, opacity etc.. to get the result you want.

          3. depending on your selection, sometimes you can just take the normal paint
brush and paint away any colours you do not want, sometimes the eraser tool
is also good for this purpose.

I hope one of these works for you
          Linda.
Thanks to the kindness of Mike (Cadet Stimpy) I few errors I made in the
lesson were brought to my attention.

          1) First where I talked about file options, I say that the graphic to the left shows
the compression options of the .jpg file format. I put the wrong graphic in that
spot, what you are viewing is actually the compression options for a .psp file
          format.

          2) The arrow tool cannot be used to zoom in or out of the image by right
clicking. I say it can. I can on my machine, but that is only because I have a
software program that allows me to do this with the arrow tool in any windows
based program. My mistake, I forgot I had that and as a result thought it was a
psp 5 feature. Please forgive! You can however change the zoom size 1:1
normal to less or more through the use of the arrow control palette.

I hope these errors have not caused too many problems for anyone. I thank
Cadet Stimpy for pointing this out in a very friendly manner. Thanks Mike!!

Linda, in the lesson you said that the color replacer tool will only work with 16
million colors or more. That is strange because I use it all the time when I am
making transparent backgrounds in gif files. Sometimes when I reduce the
image to 256 colors, the background will turn out to have pixels of colors other
than the chosen transparent background color. These little specks of color are
not very attractive so I edit them out with the color replacer tool so that the
entire background is transparent. I couldn't do this if the color replacer tool only
work with 16 millions colors or above. :-) Boy am I glad that it DOES work with
256 colors. It makes making transparent gifs so much easier!

Anyway on to the rose problem. If you downloaded the image of the rose from
the lesson, it was saved as a .gif (meaning only 256 colours).

Open the rose and do the following:

                  1) with the rose image open, go to Colors in the top menu
                  2) select Increase color depth
                  3) choose 16 million colors (24 bit)

Now try the clone tool (remember to select it from the tool palette) - no
selection needed, I have no idea why psp would say do make a selection
                  first???
MORE ON ROSEOne, did you turn the rose picture that you got from the lesson into a 16 million
colour image before starting the selection process?

If not, do it this way

                  1) Open the rose picture in psp
                  2) Select Colors from the top menu
                  3) Move down to Increase Color Depth
                  4) Choose 16 Million Colors (24 bit)
                  5) click ok

Now go about your selecting with the lasso tool. When done the selection
                  choose:

                  1) Edit
                  2) Copy
                  3) Edit
                  4) Paste as new image

Whenever you make a selection, to add another, you hold down the shift key.
When you are done, you have to fill the pattern you made, or outline it with the
line tool or brushes, or in some other way permanently mark the pattern. When
you are done, you can right click with the selection tool to make the dots go
away. If you do it before you fill it or mark it, though, the dots do go away and
leave you with nothing. Remember that the selection tool only selects

something. It doesn't draw it. I had the same problem at first.

From lesson 3, Leapin:

HOW TO CHANGE YOUR MONITOR RESOLUTION.

I recommend that if you have not done so already, you change your
computers colour depth to 800X600. It will certainly improve how graphics are
displayed on your computer. Below is how you do that:

                  to change your bit depth:

In Windows 95 Close all open applications:

                  1) On your desktop right click in a blank area (not on an icon)
                  2) From the menu that drops down select Properties
                  3) In the box that opens click the tab at the top that says Settings
                  4) Now under Color palette select either True Color (24 bit) or True Color (32
                  bit)

NOTE: since PSP 5 only goes as high as True Color (24
bit) it would be wise to select True Color (24 bit) instead of
                  True Color (32 bit).
5) In the same box there is a section called Desktop Area. Move the slider
under the label to the desired resolution of 800X600 pixels (Note Any higher
is still a waste of time on the net and higher than 800x600 will slow
                  most computers down).
                  7) Now set the size of the font you want, there are several options and you
might have to experiment to get the one you like the best. I prefer the large.
                  6) Click apply and than OK. You will now have to reboot your machine for the
                  changes to take effect.

NOTE: it is essential that before you post your web graphics to
the Internet that you change your monitor settings back to
640X480 and colour palette to 256 colour. Remember it is
important to know how your graphics will look to all those
millions who still use 256 monitors and to those who have not yet
figured out how to change their monitor colour depth settings.
What looks beautiful in 800X600 mode with true colour may
look terrible in 256 colour mode at 640X480 resolution.

More From lesson 3. using the NEAREST COLOR PALETTE is one of the best
methods to use when reducing the amount of colours used in your image. In
PSP 5 you will find this option when you go to reduce a high colour depth
image (like a 16 million colour) to a 256 or less colour image for example:

To reduce the colour depth in PSP 5:

                                            1) Click on Colors
                  2) Move down to Decrease Color Depth
                  3) Select 256 colors (8 bit)
                  4) The following window opens:
---And click on Optimized Median Cut, Nearest Color----
5) After selecting Nearest color and picking your Palette setting, click OK.

******************
There is so much info in this lesson. Gads!
Can't wait till this comes a bit more natural.

And more:LOSSLESS / LOSSY
Although .gif uses lossless and .jpg uses lossy compression (lossy means
every time an image is saved the file looses a little more file information, thus
cutting quality on each save). saving a 16 million + image to .gif also looses
quality because the image is switched to a 256 colour palette only. Such a
large colour replacement naturally means quality will suffer.

*********
the common rule of thumb is to
always use .gif for cartoons, logos, text art and to always use .jpg for
                  photographs
******************
For
the most part you should choose to use gif89a because it supports transparent
.gif files and interlacing and animated .gifs
(not discussed later because most of you know what they are already (those
dancing/moving images you see on the Web).
gif87a on the other hand only supports transparency and interlacing.

************
THIS IS SOMETHING I REALLY NEED TO WORK ON------>>>>(a single image on the Web should never be
more than 30k otherwise viewers get tired of waiting for the files to load and
move on. Some professional Web Designers would argue that all images
combined on a single Web Page should not amount to more then 30k in total!)
****************************
Another consideration to take into account when designing a .gif bound image
is to start by using the browser safe palette.
************************************
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I THINK THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I HAVE LEARNED IN RELATION TO MY SCUBA PAGE.
NOTE: Having too many graphics with contrasting colours
on a single web page can effect how the browser displays
all of them. The browser can only use one palette of 216
colours and if there are more than 216 colours amongst the
various graphics on the page the browser will
automatically revert them all to the same 216 colour
palette. This occurs more often when you are combining
.jpg and .gif images on the same page. This is why it is so
important to use colour schemes when designing your web
                  page and graphic files.

mIRC Connection

There are several ways to join these chats. My way is through mIRC http://www.mirc.co.uk You can download and get set up now.

Here are some basic instructions for getting set up.
1. After downloading and installing, the first screen you will see is one with the author's picture on it. Simply click on that screen and the program will load and start itself.
2. Click on the first icon in the toolbar that looks like piece of chain. This will disconnect you from the server and the icon will now look like a lightening bolt.
JUST a note here: You can drag around and resize the mIRC screens just as you do your Browser screens.
3. Go FILE/SETUP or click on the second icon - SET UP INFO
4. Go to the IRC Servers tab.
Hit ADD
Under description put VU.
Under IRC Server put irc.greennet.net
Port #6667 Hit ADD.
(REPEAT this step with each of these servers: webmaster.webchat.org, irc.wiregrass.com, irc.vrml.com)giving them different descriptions. I don't put a description, I put the server name in both boxes.
4.VU or the last server you added ,should now appear in the window on the previous screen.
5.Under Full Name you can either enter your real name or anything you want.
E-Mail- enter your email addy
NICKname: Pick a name that you would like to be called during these chats. Not many of us use our real names. Also enter an Alternative name.
6.Click Invisible Mode
7.Click OK
Always hit OK after making any changes in mIRC. Now Click on the lightening bolt and you will be connected and a status screen will popup.

I would suggest registering your nickname also at this point.
In the typing bar at the bottom of the status screen type this and substitute your secret password that you chose and your email addy.
/msg NickServ REGISTER your password e-mail address
For example: /msg nickserv register secretword ItsMe@hotmail.com
If the nickname you have chosen is already registered you will be told to pick a different name. Also I recommend writing down your password. You can register as many names as you wish. I would also suggest using the same password for them all. This will make things easier for you later.
8. Once you are registered and want to join the class chat type /join #sosstudy
9. You can type /join #irc-nest and come see if I am in my channel and I can help get you set up further.

You can also enter through VU at your deskGo to chat cafe on menu. Go through browser
Once in the chatcafe type this /join #sosstudy and you will be with us.
