WHAT IS CANAVAN DISEASE?
Canavan disease is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder. What this means is that both parents must carry the gene. If both parents are carriers then there is a one in four chance that the child will have Canavan Disease. This disease prevents the formation of myelin (covering around nerves) which is important for transmitting messages from the brain to the body. These children will never walk, talk, sit up, feed themselves, or even play with a toy. Gradually the children may lose the ability to see. Death usually occurs within the first decade of life.
