WELCOME TO VIRUDHUNAGAR
Virudhunagar (VNR in short), my home town was previously called as Virudhupatti (village) and is now called as Virudhunagar (town) from 29th Oct, 1923. Due to its fast development, I firmly believe that it will be called as Virudhumaanagar (city) within 10 years of tie. It is the capital of Virudhunagar District, Tamil Nadu. It is famous for its business community people. There is a saying from Business community that "Virudhunagar produces nothing, but controls everything". It is a town with a rich tradition, great culture, ancient temples of stunning architectural and artistic grandeur and friendly people.
"Virudhu" in Tamil means Medal. As the name suggest VNRians are getting Medals in almost every area.
Virudhunagar is situated in the south of Tamil Nadu, India, and it is very near to Madurai (famous for Meenakshi Amman Temple) and Sivakasi (famous for fire crackers and printing technology). River "Gousiga" runs through VNR.
VNR is approximately 7 square KM and the population is nearly 80,000 people.
National Highways 7 passes VNR and it is a Railway junction. Most of the trains and buses going to the southern end of Tamil Nadu (of course India) has to pass VNR. Trains to Tuticorin, Nagercoil, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Cochin passes VNR. Also, trains to Madurai, Chennai, Mumbai and Nagur passes VNR. There are direct buses from here to any important places in Andhra Pradesh, Kerela and Karnataka.
Mariamman Temple, which is 400 years old and Theepam (pool) in the center of the town [323' x 294' x 21'] is famous. Many shopping malls are present around Theppam. People of Virudhunagar and some 150 nearby villages celebrate a yearly festival called "Pannguni Pongal" (April Month) for the Goddess "Mariamman" and every year an Exhibition is organized by KVS School Management.
Virudhunagar has 6 temples which are 400 to 600 years old. A must to see. Also, every street has a Goddess called "Kalliamman".
People here fluently speak in Tamil and English. Also, some people speaks Telengu, Kannada, Hindi and Malayalam.
Mahatmaaji has visited Virudhunagar. And of course, almost every Prime Minister of India has visited VNR.
Virudhunagar which was in a position near the bottom of the hierarchy in Tamil Nadu, have been moved to a position of substantial economic success, increased political power and a significant degree of improved status and recognition from other places by the people of VNR. This most important factor in the strategy for advancement has been due to some organizations.
VNR has produced many politicians, film artists, business people and professionals. The Great Leader Mr. Kumaraswami Kamaraj (Posthuous) who was born (1902) in VNR, has been a Chief Minister for Tamilnadu. His years of governance is described as the "Golden Age" of Tamilnadu. He was a great leader with high oral standards setting examples for everyone. It is common to hear from every political parties in India saying that they will bring back Kamaraj rule. Kamaraj governance was marked as honesty, simplicity and transparency. He got BHARAT RATNA AWARD, the India's highest civilian award in 1976. The Tamilnadu Government has setup a memorial house for him in his own house in Virudhunagar.
