Games Workshops Background

Since its inception way back in 1979 one company has been a leading light in the games hobby industry! Founded by two college friends Steve Jackson and Ian Livingston the company has grown from the small basement run office selling White Dwarf and mail order miniatures to the one of the largest games companies on the planet, and by far the largest retailer of games anywhere in the world.

The story is not one of smooth sailing though. Many changes have been made over the past 18 years or so and the company itself as almost folded on more than one occasion. I know that many of you are ardent Workshop fans, but most of the companies customers are perhaps a little too young to remember the really early days of the company. Here is a little bit of GW trivia for you.

  1. Games Workshop went through a period of licensing games from other companies, among these where such gems as Drakkborgan (Dragonquest an excellent system!), Star Trek rpg (licensed from FASA), Dr Who (again FASA), Ghostbusters and Paranoia (West End Games).
  2. Workshop were beat to the license for Star Wars rpg by West End only after lengthy meetings with George Lucas himself and they produced some miniatures for the range that never saw the light of day.
  3. In the heart of GW’s head office lies a room called the Vault. Here every single miniature that the company has ever made can be found, including the ones that never come out.
  4. With over 100 shops world wide, Games Workshop is the largest retail Games company in history.
  5. Harlequin Miniatures, Alternative Armies, Heartbreaker, and Fantasy Forge (Kryomek now Grendal Scotia Models!) were all founded by Ex-Games Workshop employees, and have many of the companies old designers working for them.
  6. When the IRA bomb planted in Manchester, England went off in July ’96, the GW store was gutted and the display of full size Space Marine by some miricale (or will of the Emperor!) survied, only, to split in two later at the studio.
