Dr. Mark Spicer


Mark Spicer is Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Music at Hunter College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York. He holds a Ph.D. in music theory from Yale University. His writings on the reception history and analysis of popular music, especially British pop and rock since the 1960s, have appeared in several scholarly books and journals, including Sounding Out Pop (2010), which he co-edited with John Covach for the University of Michigan Press. Most recently, he has edited the volume on Rock Music for Ashgate’s Library of Essays on Popular Music series, and has been appointed Associate Editor of Music Theory Spectrum for 2012–15. In addition to his scholarship and teaching, Mark maintains an active parallel career as a professional keyboardist and vocalist. He continues to take the stage most weekends with his “electric R&B” group, the Bernadettes, and sings on most Sundays during the academic year with the Christ Church Choir in New Haven, CT.
