La`au Kanahiku Kumamakolu.....73rd Plant
Olomea
Perrottetia sandwicensis
Somewhat common as a native in Hawaiian wet forests, the Olomea
is easily distinguished by its bright-red leaf veins and stalks.
Olomea grows as a bush to small tree. Hawaiians prefered this
wood to create fire by friction, rubbing it against the much
softer Hau, Hibiscus tiliaceus. In Ho`oilo, the wet
season, Olomea bears large clusters of conspicuous red berries.
