"Back around 1920, Herschel King's grandfather, Wade McCoin. owned a 300 acre farm near where Lake Texoma dam now stands. A third of it was Red River Bottom land.

It was almost virgin territory, King says. It had huge pecan trees over 75 years old, ageless hickory-nut trees and other timbers of all descriptions. It was the ultimate in good squirrel living.

Every once and awhile Grandpa would take up his rifle and go down in the woods for a mess of squirrels. There was no one who could prepare those squirrels quite as good as Grandma Carrie.

On one of the squirrel hunts, McCoin found a foal that looked to be only a day or two old. Its mother was nowhere around. McCoin persumed it had died giving birth to the foal.

He pushed and pulled and, when it resisted, carried the foal the quarter mile back to the house. He spread word among his neighbors that he had somebody's foal. He advertised in the Denison Herald. No one claimed it.

Grandpa hand fed the little foal until it could fend for itself and eat with the other horses. By this time, it was a shiny gray.

When Grandpa came out of the house toward the barn, that little colt would follow him around like a pet dog. It even followed Grandpa when he went back squirrel hunting. When apples in Grandma's orchard were ripe. Grandpa was always giving the little gray an apple.

When the gray got older, McCoin used it as a saddle horse and, sparingly, on the cultivator. He never used the gray to break ground, though, he saved the hard work for the mules.

On Saturdays Grandpa would harness the gray mare to the black buggy with the red wheels, load up a bunch of eggs and go over to Denison.

After a few years, McCoin sold his place and moved to a farm 12 miles south of Holdenville, Oklahoma.

They had been there about a year when one evening about dusk, they heard the awfullest commotion coming from the edge of the woods about 100 yards from the back of the house.

Grandpa and two of his sons rushed out there with shotguns. The mare was beating off three wolves that was trying to attack the

red-eared yearling. The mare already had pawed one of the wolves to death.

The old gray mare was a better watch dog, at night, than the dogs or the guineas up in the trees. If something was stirring, the mare was first to sound the alarm."

I have misplaced the rest of the articles but it went on to say that the day after Grandpa died, one of his sons went to the barn and found the mare dead. Grandma Carrie said "Life just wasn't worth living without Grandpa, as far as the old gray mare was concerned".

5-4 WADE HAMPTON McCOIN: born 19 August 1958, Whitleyville, Jackson County, Tennessee. Married CARRIE CARVER 8 December 1881, Whitleyville. They lived on a farm near his father for several years. Wade Hampton was a laywer and a farmer. He was a law pardner with Cordell Hull in Gainesboro, Tennessee until Mr. Hull went into politics. They moved to Kentucky, then Denison, Texas where Wade owned a neighborhood grocery store but Carrie wanted to get back to a farm so they bought a farm and moved to Oklahoma where they died. After moving to Oklahoma, Wade never had a law practice but he did act as a Judge at times and he did represent people who had no money but needed a lawyer. Wade died 25 February 1946, Carrie, born 7 October 1866, died 7 October 1959, both buried in Holdenville, Oklahoma. Their children:
