Annie Soules McCaughan (widow of James Lee McCaughan (2)) told me her grandmother who was a neighbor to the McCaughan's in Smith County, Mississippi told her that while the widow and mother were gone to pick up the body, the rest of the women in the neighborhood started digging the grave, there were no able bodied men around, they were all gone off to war. The ground was frozen and it was so very hard to dig. When the widow and mother returned home with the body, they realized that the box was too wide to go through the cabin door so they moved the wagon as close to the door as possible and the women took turns all night to watch over the body for fear an animal might be attracted to it.

The next morning, the body had frozen and was so heavy, they could not lower it into the grave so several of the women went on horseback in different directions to see if they couldn't find some older men who were still able to help them.

When I visited that area, Raymond Odell McCaughan and I hunted through several old cemeteries of the area but couldn't find Christopher Columbus McCaughan's grave. At the time, we visited St. John's Cemetery and Raymond said he felt like that was it for it was on the fork of Leaf River and Tallahalsa Creek (told in Terry Ford's obituary, next page) but the caretaker was not home. Later Raymond returned and the caretaker showed him where the McCaughan section of the graveyard was. None of the graves were marked and they did not know how man were buried there outside Christopher-possibly his mother and his small daughter. Raymond ordered and received a footstone from the Government and placed the stone in the area. Tile cemetery is well kept up. There is now a new church across the road that uses it.

The children of Christopher Columbus McCaughan and Loverne Catherine King were:

OBITITUARY

MRS TERRY JANE FORD

My dear wife, Mrs Terry Jane Ford, was the daughter of Christopher Columbus and Loverne Catherine McCaughan. She born 22 February 1860 and after many years of invalidism and after being in bed 69 days, she died September 30, 1912. Aged. 52 years, 7 months and 8 days. Her father died at Enterprise, Mississippi in 1863. He was taken sick with pneumonia during the Civil war at Bowling Green, Kentucky and started to his home in Smith County, Mississippi but did not reach there. His body was taken home and interred at the old family cemetery in the Fork of Leaf River and Tallahala Creek. She and a sister who only lived four years were his only children. Her mother afterwards married William Daniels of Lawrence County, Mississippi, and to them were born three boys and one girl; two of the boys died in infancy, and the other about eight years ago leaving only the half sister living, Mrs Mrs Lela Bourne, who now resides near Oakdale, Mississippi. Her mother died in 1873. Then Uncle J.J. McCaughan who resided in this (Smith) County was appointed her guardian, and took her in his home where she lived until 11 August 1836, when we were married. She in her 15th year and I in my 18th year. There was nothing but children and from hardship and exposure, she ruined her health as we started out in life without anything and we both worked hard. My health was bad and she did all she could to take hard steps off me. We had 16 children. 11 boys and 5 girls. 3 boys and 1 girl died in infancy. Our oldest son, W.C. Ford died July 14th, 1906. Oldest daughter, Mrs Lela Stringer. died April 26, 1910; which leaves myself, 7 boys, 3 girls, 3 daughter-in-laws, 2 friends to grieve after her. She has two Uncles, David and Thomas McCaughan, and one of her father's half brothers, Donnie Flowers yet living some where in Texas and the family of her Uncle John McCaughan (who is dead) and her father's half brother Richard Flowers (who is dead) living some were in Texas; also an Aunt, Mrs J.J. McCaughan who lives near Poteet, Texas, and an Uncle, her mothers half brother, Henry Jones, who lives at Kerens, Texas and her mothers only whole brother, Sanders S. King, and her mother's half sister, Mrs Sarah Stringer. both living in this state (Mississippi). We lived together 37 years, 1 month and 19 days as pleasantly as two ever did, she was always most affectionate to me and went with me when she could and was kind to everyone, white or colored. She was God fearing and God honoring, and had in 1886 a wonderful Christian experience which she related to the Primitive Baptist Church at New Zion in this county, Saturday before the 2nd Sunday in August 1887, and she was gladly recieved and was baptised the next day by Elder S.V. Ford and though feeble, always attended her meetings when she could and was delighted to entertain her brothers and sisters at her home.

Complying with the exhortations of the apostle Paul in Rom: 11;12-24. She had a strong grace to sustain her in her illness, though begging the Lord to let the cup pass, she exclaimed "Never thy will, now mine is done." She dreamed that she was dead and yet felt happy. I had in all, 7 doctors with her, but they could do nothing to relieve her, only with morphine. She bade the children good-bye and sent word to Sanders, who was absent, to do his duty, as she was satisfied he had a change and sought to join the church: She told Lonnie to go ahead in the discharge of his duty-that the Lord would hold him up, and she said the good Lord would take care of me. She never had an enemy on earth, so far as she knew, and she avocated only what she knew, and she did only what she thought was right and continueially praised the Lord for his goodness and mer She often sang "Jesus is all I wish or want" and the last hymn she sang was "How Firm a Foundation, ye Saints of the Lord."

It seems hard indeed to live without my devoted and exemplary wife. I desire to trust in the Lord and to ask all his dear people to pray that I may be kept in the straight and narrow way.

The body of my dear wife was laid as she desired, in the cemetery at New Zion about 300 yards from out house, in the presence of a large congregation after some appropiate remarks by Elder S.V. Ford with Psalms:

"Guide me 0 Thou great Jehovah

Pilgrim through this barren land.

I am weak, but thou art mighty,

Hold me with Thy powerful hand.

Written by her loving but unworthy husband, W.M. Ford, Route 2, Taylorsville, Mississippi.

where he was a mining engineer and later found the "McCaughan Mining Investment Company". They remained in Durango, Mexico.

On the insistance of his wife, Rev. Charles Thompson McCaughan started an autobigraphy after he retired and he wrote a page or two each year until his death. He states in it that no one would be interested in his life but his children and grandchildren. On page 2, Emilie wrote a short page of her life.

EMILIE S. McCAUGHAN

The many little incidents of my life I have repeated so many times to gratify the loving curiousity of our children what I have to record will only be a repetition.

I was born on December 20th, 1820 in Frome, England. The town is a place of considerable manufacturing importance about twelve miles from the once famous city of Bath, and one hundred and nine miles west of London.

Frome is built on the celebrated forest of Selwood, where King Alfred the Great concealed himself in a hut of a cowheard during an invasion of the country by the Danes. It is the scene too of the interesting story of Lorna Doon.

I have been told that during the persecution to which dissenters were subjected in the reign of James the First' of my ancestory taking refuge in Holland returning to England on the accession of William and Mary in 1688. My grandfather's name was John Sheppard, grandmother's name was Susan Gregory. Fatheris name was John Sheppard and Mothers name, Fanny Cleman, they came to the United States in 1825-26 and landed after a six week voyage in New York, remained there a short time and then went to Boston which they left after a stay of about two years. They removed to Stubenville, Ohio where most of my life was spent until my marriage in 1841 and the entering of a home of my own in Sidney, Ohio.

The subsequent events of our united history your father has given in the preceeding pages, so it is not necessary for me to repeat. When a child, I attended school in the different places where we resided, beginning in England, a very small tot, and graduating in the Stuebenville Female Seminary, conducted by the Right Reverand A.A. and Betty Hetty Beatty in 1838. After that, I taught in a young ladies seminary in Alleghany City until I became a happy wife on November 2nd, 1841. The duties of this relationship together with those of Mother to our beloved children I have endeavoured with the blessing of God and the assistance of my noble husband with some degree of faithfullness to fulfill, and have only to regret that n many instances these efforts have been so feeble and unworthy who will, I trust, be spared to be good and do good, in their day and geneation.

Your loving mother,

Emilie S. McCaughan

4-3 FRANK LEE McCAUGHAN: married TERESA McINTIRE, in Durango, Mexico. He managed his father's ranch, the San Juan, until the McCaughan Investment Company was formed. He then worked there, running it after his father retired. They owned a hacienda in the main part of Durango with a patio, lots of cages with birds, flowers, and a fireplace in each room which was their source of heat. They had no children but they had three chicuchaua dogs that never had to walk, they were always carried by Frank, his wife, or one of the maids. They had three baby highchairs that were put at the table at meal time, one dog to each chair, and they were hand fed.

Evelyn Bell, widow of Raymond Bell, Jr, who was American, told me she was always a mystery to Frank for she was 6 feet tall in sock feet and always wore heels so it made her taller than most of the men in Mexico. Frank had a lot of fun teasing Evelyn when she was trying to learn to speak Spanish. Evelyn said they had great arguments, she was the only woman around who would speak her peace. Teresa, Frank's wife, was half Mexican and half Irish and she had been taught in the Mexican tradition that a woman is to be seen and not heard.

After Frank retired, once a week, which was every Saturday, he had his formal bath, which started early in the morning and lasted all day. He was always so afraid that he would catch a cold. By mid morning, a roaring fire was built in the master bedroom by a maid, a large tub was moved to the bedroom and hot water put into it, ready for his bath. Immediately after his long, leasurely bath, he jumped in bed with lots of covers and hot stones to keep him warm. He lunched in bed and remained there until dinner time. Talk about the "life of Riley", it sounds like he had it. They died in Durango. No children.

4-3 RAYMOND BELL: born 26 September 1882, Great Bend, Kansas. He couldn't get along with his step-father so he left home at tha age of twelve. He worked on ranches, racetracks, and did fancy shooting in shows. By the time he was fifteen, he was a dead shot. At the age of seventeen, he went to work for Swift Meat Packing Company. At nineteen, he entered Iowa State University at Ames, Iowa, where he stayed one year.

From there, Ray Bell joined a cattle drive from Woodward, Oklahoma to Clayton, New Mexico. When the drive was over, he decided to go see his Uncle, John McCaughan, in Durango, Mexico. By the time he got to the border, he didn't have enough money to pay duty on everything so he kept only his saddle and took the bus to Durango. When he got there in April 1902 with ten dollars in his pocket, a saddle and no knowledge of the Spanish language. His Uncle hired him to work on San Juan for his room and board for one year, no pay. He then hired out to remove cattle rustlers and work on a ranch named Sabinas Coahuilla, as its foreman. Later, he was hired back by his Uncle, John McCaughan, as a foreman as John had enlarged the ranch. He got 4 pacos a month, room, board, and he was allowed to run any cattle he owned on the ranch. It was here that he first used his brand, the horseshoe.

In 1907 Ray Bell had saved up $50,000 so he decided to stop ranching and be a land and mine promoter. In four months, he was down to thirty dollars, which he gave to three newsboys. By this time, the McCaughan's had gone into the McCaughan Investment Company so Ray was hired, once again. This time, to manage their ranch, San Juan. 24 September 1908, Ray Bell married HELEN BUSH of Des Moines, Iowa. He eventually bought his own ranch and when John S. McCaughan, his Uncle, died, Ray bought the San Juan ranch from his uncle John's heirs. Ray, Sr. died in El Paso, Texas around 1974. Their children:

----5-1 RAYMOND BELL, JR.

----5-2 DR. BETTY BELL

**********

5-1 RAYMOND BELL, JR.: born 30 December 1910 on San Juan de Michis ranch while it was still owned by the McCaughan's. When he was old enough, his dad sent him to Iowa State University. Ames, Iowa. This was to serve two purposes; one, he would brush up on his English and the other, he would get his degree in Agriculture. Ray, Jr. hated it, he felt cooped up for he didn't have a horse to ride. He begged to go home but his dad wouldn't let him until he got his degree. After the first year, it wasn't so bad for he found another boy from South America so they rented an apartment. His English suffered however for when they were together, they spoke Spanish. He married EVELYN E. _____.

After his graduation, Raymond, Jr. started buying ranches in Mexico and Texas. Some of their time each year was spent in El Paso, Texas while he was overseeing his ranches in that area. They wound up with fifteen ranches in Mexico and Texas. The Mexican ranch base was "Atotonilco" which means "Warm Water" in Indian language. It was on the Santa Fe trail from Mexico City. Durango is the capital of the State of Durango, Mexico, settled in 1550. It is noted for its mining, cattle and timber.

When the last revolution broke out in Mexico, the Bell's took off for El Paso, Texas. Their home in Mexico was taken over by the soldiers and used as a headquarters. When the fighting was over, they were notified that it was safe to go back to Mexico, which they did, but they found that everything of value had been stolen and the ranch was so run down they decided to give the ranch to the Mexican government since they had no guarantee that they wouldn't start fighting again. They now own only property in Texas.

Raymond Bell, Jr. died 19 July 1979 in El Paso. At the time of his death, he owned the largest Winchester Gun collection in the United States which, the last I heard, was still housed in their game room in their home in El Paso but Evelyn has since moved to an apartment so don't know where the guns are now. THE IMMIGRANT

THOMAS McCAUGHAN

COUNTY ANTRIM, IRELAND ca 1745, TO EBENEZER, TENNESSEE

1 THOMAS McCAUGHAN: brother to Denis McCaughan, born in County Antrim, Ireland ca 1745. Went to USA, settling in Tennessee where he started the settlement of Ebenezer, which is west of Knoxville. He built a specious home which he named "Maple Grove" because of the maple trees that line the entrance road to the house. It is believed that these trees are from saplings brought from Canada since they are not of the native variety there. Tom's home is made of brick that was made on the site. A lot of the interior furnishings were sent from England. It is still a show place of the area and is on the "Heritage Tour" out of Knoxville.

Thomas McCaughan never married. When he died, ca. 1824, his estate was left to Catherine McCaughan, his niece. "Maple Grove" is now a bed and breakfast owned by Betty Lockett. It is kept up beautifully, has been added onto until now it has 20 rooms
