NORTH AMERICAN DESCENDANTS OF GAELIC CLAN MacEACHAIN

Compiled by Minniebell McKaughan Perkins

1991

A genealogical study from the "Horse Lord" Eacain

Covering American cousins now spelling the name McCaughan, McCaughern, McCaughrean, McCaughn, McKaughan, McKaughn, McKahan, McKeighan, McCaughin, McCahan, McCoin, McKoin, McGaughan, McGaughran, McGahan, McConn, McCann, McEachain, McEachin, McEachan, and McEachern.

You got it from your father,

it was all he had to give.

So it's yours to use and cherish,

for as long as you may live.

If you loose a watch he gave you,

it can always be replaced.

But a black mark on your name, son,

can never be erased.

It was clean the day you took it,

and a worthy name to bear.

When he got it from his father,

there was no dishonor there.

So make sure you guard it wisely,

after all is said and done.

You'll be glad the name is spotless,

when you give it to your son.

FAMILY TROUBLE

I married a widow with a grown-up daughter. My father visited our house, fell in love with my daughter and married her. Thus my father became my son and my daughter became my mother. My wife being my mother's mother, makes her my grandmother, and thus I became my own grandfather.

THE MEANING OF OUR ARMORIAL, SEAL & HOUSEBADGE

This is the ARMORIAL of Chavelier John Alexander McCaughan, Esquire, KH, BS E, LGH, FAS, FSA SCOT, 43rd traditional representative, 29th historical head and 10th McCaughan of Ballyverdagh. Born 1906, Ballverdagh, N. Ireland, died 25 October 1981 Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This Armorial is a story of his life. The motto: "Sian Mac Eachain Per Ardua Ad Alta" means: "Safe be McCaughan's through difficulty to the Top, or Heaven". The eagle without the belt is his seal. The object that looks like a hat is actually a breast plate meaning John was in the military. In the shield: the two red cropped hands and one red lion means he was Knighted twice in Ireland. The cropped hands being the first seal John found us using in 1147 A.D. The wavy blue lines means John left the motherland and the three three leaf clover connected by one stem means he went to Canada. The Horses and base to the shield was added when John recieved his third Knighthood in 1979. His three Knighthoods are in the base, around the bottom of the shield. One is the Rose of Jerusalem, I don't know what the eagle in the shield means and the cross at the bottom of the shield means John was Grand Prior, or head of the Anglican Churches in Canada, representing the Queen. The horses I will exlain later. Since an Armorial is for the Head of the Clan and not the clansmen, we should respect it by only using it in our homes in picture form, never on jewelry, clothing, or stationery.

McCAUGHAN CLANSMAN SEAL: The motto means the same as above. The clansmen's Eagle is the same as John's. The belt around it indicates it is the Clansmen's seal and not the Head of the Clan. They used the seal by pressing it to berry juice or later to an ink pad and placed it at the end of their signature and also dropping a few drops of wax on the flap of an envelope and pressing the seal into the wax. We can use this any way we choose.

THE HOUSE BADGE was given to us by the Heraldry of Ireland in 1979 after Chevelier John recieved his third Knighthood. It is for ancient and extended families. Since Cheveliar John researched and documented us back to 247 A.D., we have been around for a while. Again, the motto. The white Horse standing on his back legs means we are documented back to the "Horse Lord". The ancient crown around the horses neck and chain draped over its back means we are documented back to the Pictish Tribes. Our name is the English version of MacEachain, which means, "Son of or Descendant of the Horse Lord". The red cropped hand on the horses shoulder was the first seal John found them using after they started using records in "Pict Land", which is now southern Scotland. It also is rarely given these days for it is the symbol of the Ulsters but since we used it hundreds of years before the Ulsters, the Heraldry placed it on our Horses shoulder of which John was quite pleased.

PREFACE

In the early 1950's, I was looking through my fathers papers and ran across a list my aunt Cora McKaughan had prepared for him, telling everything she knew about their grandfather, Rev. Wm. McKaughan. All she knew was that he was a circuit rider, his wife's name was Elizabeth, that they had gone to Greenwood County, Kansas as the state was opening up, and the children's names. After my grandfather, Francis Newton McKaughan, had taken his family to Oklahoma in 1893, there seemed to have been little contact with the Kansas relatives. My husband was traveling two weeks out of the month so I decided to see if I could find the illusive Rev. Wm. McKaughan. This was years before "Roots" was published and it became popular to hunt our ancestors. There was little information available and since I didn't have the foggiest notion what I was doing, I spun my wheels for about three years.

About this time, Frances McCoin Nuttle, of Wichita, Kansas, found her Oklahoma Cousins. She knew about a name change, which we didn't. She had asked her grandfather , William Jasper McKaughan/McCoin, why he had changed the name. He told her, "no one could spell it, no one could pronounce it, it sounded like McCoin so I just changed it". I found that around 1870, Rev. Wm. and all his surviving sons, excluding my grandfather, had also changed the name to McCoin. Frances connected me with the late Elah McKaughn Peace of High Point, North Carolina. Elah and her husband, Raymond, had worked out most of the North Carolina line so she knew that Rev. Wm. had come from there. She sent me an obituary of Rev. Wm. that had been found in one of his brothers Bible showing the name change, a new wife and a location change so my world started looking up.

Shortly after, Patty Howard, of Mesa, Arizona, found me. She descends from my grandfather's youngest brother', Julius McCoin, who went to Oregon. Patty has a Morman library in her city where she donates a lot of time so as I got names, locations and dates, I would tell her and she would look up what was available for me. She has done most of the courthouse record research through the years. As I found a new line, I tried to find one who was interested in working with me and share their information. I stored the information away. As I kept finding more people and collecting more information, it started falling together like a jigsaw puzzle, so you see, you are the authors, I only compiled the material you sent me. I was still only working on the McKaughan line and its various spelling after we came to America: McCoin, McKoin, McGahan, McConn, McCann, etc.

In 1965, I found Chavelier John Alexander McCaughan, our "Head of the Clan", he assured me McCaughan and McKaughan were the same name, as well as McCaughin, McKeighan, etc., all English versions of the Gaelic Sirname "MacEachain". When we were transferred to Ft. Worth, Texas, I found several McCaughan's in the area and after talking with them I realized they all descended from one ancestor, John McCaughan, the surveyor. I won't try to list all of you who sent me complete lines, autobiographies, and continue to do research and share your information you find with me . You know who you are and I am afraid I might overlook some one. I have given you recognition at the end of each subject. I would however, like to give special recognition to John Simpson McKaughan (3), of Dallas, Texas, for doing the art work on the book and designing the cover, to Don McGahan of Anderson, South Carolina for working so hard to try to get the book published, and to Suzanne and Robert McCoin, Anadarko, Oklahoma, for the many hours of typing and getting it on the internet and for helping me edit it. When I started copying my material, my purpose was to get the information I had collected that I had in 14, 3 inch, 3 holed notebooks, under one cover, since all the immigrants coming from County Antrim, Ireland, descends from one of the 8 sons of Archibald McCaughan who went from Scotland to Ireland in the early 1600's. I wanted to get a copy in the Genealogy Library at Salt Lake City, Utah, which is considered one of the World best Genealogical Libraries, and a copy to the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. for somewhere down the line, another will get interested. If they don't know all the spellings, they can waste a lot of time and also, the information Chevalier John McCaughan has shared, they would probably never know. I also wanted to show our younger generation that we have a very noble past. That we are documented back to 247 A.D. which makes us one of the oldest clans of Scotland and farther than most families can go and make them proud of their heritage.

When they heard I was copying my material, many "kissen cousins" asked me to have it published. You note, I have not written it as a genealogy book, some genealogy graphs and sheets are hard for even me to follow. I have tried to write it as simply as possible so everyone could follow. With each immigrant, I have listed their children and followed each child down as far as I have before going to the next child. I tried to be as correct on names and dates as possible but in some cases, people have sent me different dates on the same person so what do you do? I used the date the most used from that line. Also, on the fact sheet, it asks you to give the date and the month you were born, married, died. In many cases, instead of writing the name of the month, they used numbers. I didn't know if they had the date and month in the proper place or not, if the number was less then 12, it was impossible to tell, so I imagine there are errors, but I tried.

CODE

On top of the box, I have listed the parents of the McCaughan whose family is being covered.

In the box, The parents of that family and listed their children. The subject covered on that page is in bold print.

Example:

Parents: Archibald McKaughan (1) and Rebecca Boyd

Children of Archibald McKaughan, Jr. and Jane Mercer: REBECCA (3), GEORGE (1), HUGH (2), FORRESTER (1), ARCHIBALD (3), ALEXANDER, JOHN, GRISELLA.

3-1 REBECCA McKAUGHAN (3):

*********

The numbers in the brackets after the most popular names used in the family shows others have used that name in generations before them.

Before each subject, there are two numbers. The first number is the generation they were in af ter they got to America and the second, the child they were in their family. Rebecca was the third generation, first child, daughter of Archibald McKaughan, Jr and Jane Mercer, son of the Archibald McKaughan (1) and Rebecca Boyd., and there had been daughters named Rebecca two generations before her.

HAPPY HUNTING

THE EARLY FAMILYS

In 1965, I found the "Head of our Clan" who was, at the time, Sir John Alexander McCaughan of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He was the oldest son of the oldest son down through 43 generations. He worked his lifetime documenting the Heads of the Clan and has the family worked back to 247 A.D. In 1979, John was knighted for the third time to Chevalier which was the highest he could go and not be of Royal blood. At that time, the Heraldry of Ireland presented us with our "Housebadge The following is what Chevalier John Alexander McCaughan told me about the early family.

We derive from the Pictish Tribes, as they are now called. A lot has been written about the Picts but no one knows for sure just where they came from to what is now called England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland, they were there thousands of years before others started populating the area and when they were later defeated and the clans broken up by the Vikings, the Picts left no written history or written language. I asked Chevalier John just where he thought they came from and he told me he thought they were Norsemen, going strickly by their coloring and stature. They were big boned, strong, blue eyes, hair from blond to sandy brown and they seemed to be at home on sea as well as on land. Of course, we are not all big, Blue eyed, with sandy hair today. After all, our mothers, or fathers as the case might be, had a little to do with what we look like and the dark genes are much stronger than the light. Enough is written about the early Picts in histories to tell us they came in family groups which were called tribes or clans. The bigger the group, the safer they were so they stayed in these family groups, living as one family. This was long before Christian names were used so to identify themselves, each family group got together and chose one from their group they felt could lead their family best. He was the "Lord" or "Leader". Each of these Lords decided upon a symbol of a fish, a fowl or an animal they admired for its strength, bravery, etc. Ours chose the Horse so he became the "Horse Lord" or "Leader of the Horse tribe". When we were in battle with another clan, since we had no uniforms to tell us apart in the heat of the battle, our shields had a white horse standing on it back legs, painted on it. The shields had a wooden frame with leather stretched over the frame. For paint, they had used berry, nut or tree stains. As they began to weave, a banner (totam or flag) was woven with a white horse on it. This banner flew over the family compound if we were not in battle and taken with them and flown during a battle. All the clansmen worked in the fields and brought their grain, or their kill, to one place and everyone ate from this supply. When a man married, he brought his bride to his clan, so his sons fought for the Horse Tribe, so when a girl married, she went to her husbands clan and her sons fought for her husbands clan. The Head of the Clan was the overseer, he owned everything and he made all the decisions for the family, but he also was responsible for everyone in the clan. maidens, orphaned children, widows, etc. to see that they were fed, protected and clothed. When he died, the next in line, who was generally his oldest son, got everything and became the next "Head of the Clan". If the Head had no sons, or for some reason, no son qualified (idiot, etc) then he could choose who he wanted to be next in line.

In Scottish Gaelic, "Horse Lord" was spelled "Eacain", later it started being spelled "MacEachain". In Scotland, Mac or as we now write Mc, in front of a name means "Son of, or descendant of" so MacEachain means, "son of, or descendant of the Horse Lord". In Ireland, in an early Clan book, Chevalier John found Prince Eachain, in 247 A.D. leading his Clan across the channel from what is now County Down, Norther Ireland to what is now southern Scotland, around Galloway. His father, who had been the King of the Irish Picts, had just been killed defending his kingdom so

i.

Eachain, the next in line, was leading the family to safety. It is surmised that they had just had a Clan war and had lost. At this time. Gaelic was spoken. hundred of years later, when Scotland became part of the British Isles, England sent British subjects to Scotland as Kings and more people started populating and area. Like we treated our American Indians, these people started treating the Picts. History books call us the "terrible Picts", for we always seemed to be fighting someone. Well, naturally, some one was always trying to take land from us we had claimed for hundreds of years. About this time, the Vikings came to Scotland and the King realized he had two fighting groups on his hands, the Vikings and the Picts, so the King made a deal with the Vikings that if they would do away with the Picts and break up the clans, the Vikings could have what land they wanted, which they did pretty well. What Picts left, sort of melted in with the remainder of the people. Records were not kept well in "Pict Land" which is southern Scotland, until around 1150 A.D. when Chevalier John found in the first book the recording of Gillichrist MacEachain. Since Scotland was part of the British Isles, more and more English was being spoken and there appears to have been a drive for the men with Gaelic spelled names to change them to the English version. Gillichrist changed his name to MacCaughan. The clans were broken up by this time so not all changed the name and Chevalier John found over fifty ways spelled during this time. He didn't feel they kept all these spellings. Many of them were not educated and about the only place their names were recorded were in Church records. If they couldn't read or write, it was left up to the church clerk to spell it like it sounded to him. In Gaelic speaking countries, McCaughan and McEachain are pronounced the same, even today. It is "Mc Cack" a short roll and a short n. Since we do not have a roll in our language, Some picked up an "r" in the name. There are many English versions of the name but McCaughan is still the most popular. If you work on the family in America, you will find quite often the name was spelled McCaughran. This means the Gaelic pronounciation was still being used and the roll came out sounding like an "r".

All through the reign of the British Kings in Scotland, Chevalier John found the Heads of the Clans were very close to the Kings. They were in their armies, their wardens, their ministers, we sat on their juries and one, Sir Hector, was the Private Standard Bearer for King Robert 1st. Many were knighted. In Scotland and Ireland, each man has to earn his own titles. They are not passed on down through generation to generation like in England. You do not ask for a knighthood. It is given to you by the Royal Family in recognition of you for an outstanding in some field-bravery in battle, music, theater, writing, etc. Johns last knighthood was given to him because he had documented our name back so far. For favors we did for the Kings, they gave us land and homes. We seemed to have lived pretty "high on the hog" for many generations. We owned homes by the sea, homes in the mountains, and our castle "Barmagachan" in the Parish of Borgue, near Kirkcudbright, is still in existence. Our clansmen who have visited Barmagachan report that it is quite a thrill. Rather than a castle, they said they would call it a manor house, but it is called a castle. Its the oldest building in the area. All the natives call it "Old Barney". You can get the directions to it by going to the tourist bureau in downtown Kirkcudbright. It has around 20 rooms, built in a U shape. I don't know how much land it originally had but it still goes to the Irish Sea (about 3 miles) and it includes the Parish of Borgue, which is about a half mile away.in When Scotland had her war with England for her independence, like our revolutionary war, and she won, she took back all the lands from the different men who had been given land and homes by the British subject Kings. At this time, we lost Barmagachan and most all the other homes and land we owned. Around 1600 A.D., The Honorable Earl of Antrim, who was Protestant and who owned

ii.

most of the five counties that is now called Northern Ireland, looked around and found that after the reform, most of the Catholics of the Isles were settling in southern Ireland. He felt that one day they would cause him trouble so he sent word to Scotland that any Protestant who needed land, he would give them land if they would come help him defend his land. The Head of our Clan at that time was Archibald McCaughan and he had 8 sons. He took his family from Scotland to County Antrim, Ireland, where he was given 1500 acres which starts two and a half miles south of where the city of Ballycastle now stands. He named his land "Ballyverdagh" which in Gaelic means, "Home of the warden to the King" so we feel he could have possibly at one time been a warden to the King. His sons all stayed in Northern Ireland. Chevalier John said it is not the best land in Northern Ireland but it is the most beautiful. It is in the Glens where all the songs and poems are written about. Unlike before him when the Heads of the Clan died, he left everything to the next in line, it appears that Archibald gave each son land in different parts of Ballyverdagh when the son married. Ballyverdagh today is not much larger than an average farm but the land around it of a radius of about 8 miles is owned by different McCaughan's, or those of McCaughan blood. Ballyverdagh has been passed down to the next in line for the 10 generations they have been in Ireland. Chevalier John recieved it at the age of 6 when his father died. John is the oldest of 3 sons and his mother could not run the farm and get her children to school each day in Ballycastle so she rented the farm to an uncle and she took her family to Ballycastle, where they were raised.

Chevalier John said it is not a law, but you are taught that when you finish school you owe an obilgation to your country so his plans were to go to the Royal Army and then go to Ballyverdagh and become a gentleman farmer. He had no more than finished his basic training when an uprising occurred in County Antrim so he was transferred to the Royal Ulster Constabuary and sent home to take care of the uprising, knowing that he could never go back home to live again. He had an order and he tried to fill it as best he could. I asked him why he could not go home and he told me, because of the IRA. They are hooded like our KKK so you don't know who their members are, He knew that each of them would have a contract to kill him on sight. They hate England but they hate the English soldiers more. He did go back many times but when he did, he was always on the move, stuck mostly to larger cities, and never told anyone he was coming or where he was going. After that uprising, in the late 1920's, he took his mother and two brothers to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where he remained until his death in 1981. One brother stayed in Toronto, the other went to England.

iii.

HEADS OF CLAN MacEACHAIN

The following is a report, in part, from Chevalier John Alexander McCaughan to the Lords of Lyon Court:

The genealogy of this family has not been fully researched and firmly documented for the years prior to 1150 A.D., this primarily because of the evident scarcity of Public Records for some periods in Galloway history. Until we come to Gillichrist MacEachain, the first of this family found on records with their surname Anglized. His Christian name indicates his family close connections with the Celtic Church in those early days. Gillichrist meant "son of Christ, born on Christ's birthday".

17 th GILLICHRIST MacEACHAIN/MacCAUGHAN, the lst Historical Representative, 17th Traditional Head of the Name and Family. The first Feudal Baron and Laird Barone of McCaughan and 5th MacEachain Mor. In the first document where his name is found he is registered Gillichrist MeCachen (the mode still pronouncing the family name in the old land) when his name appears in the 4th place as witness to a charter of lands by Earl Duncan of Galloway, to Monks at Melrose Abbey. He witnessed other land-charters in Galloway during the reign of Malcolm IV, King of Scotland 1153-1165 and his brother and successor William the Lion. also King of Scotland 1165-1214 A.D. Among other issue, his heir, CONALL.

18 th CONALL, or RONALD McCAUGHAN, succeeded his father as 2nd Feudal Barone and Laird Barone of McCaughan. Early in the 13th century, it is apparent that his family branched out and spread over into the Kingdom of Man, where because of the early mention of the surname in Manx Chronicles, and again in place-names, some which are Ballakcighan (Abbory Parish), and Ballakaighan (German Parish) are still preserved. In the Manx Kingdom, the family name again variously recorded and most often begins with the letter "K", also since 1611 A.D., some branches have dropped the prefix "Mac" entirely. Conall died in Wigtownshire, susposed to be in battle, leaving two sons: DUNCAN and ROLAND.

ROLAND McCAUGHAN, the younger, sometimes Roland McGauchan, or Roland de Mearns, by which he was better known, was Laird Barone of a district in Renfrewshire, at Paisley, Scotland. His granddaughter, Lady Mary McGauchan, the heretrix of the Baroney of Mearns, married Sir Aymer Maxwell and they were the ancestors to the Earls of Nithsdale and all the House of Maxwell. Sir Aymer and his wife, Lady Mary, served on the Council of Alexander 111 rd., King of Scotland 1249-1286, till September 1255 after which Sir Aymer was Chamberlain of Scotland 1258-1260 and Jucticiar of Galloway 1264 A.D.

19 th DUNCAN McCAUGHAN, or Duncan Ap Scollosthes, 3rd Feudal and Laird Barone, and possibly aLay Abbot of the Native Church in his territory in Kirkcudbrightshire. The official, or To-name also borne by the McCaughan Representatives as they enter mediaeval times and even up to 1300 A.D., is that of Askelok, a name found variously recorded, that is derived from the Pictish name of Scollofthes meaning the official or Head of his church. "Ap" is Welch for "son of". According to many scholars, this is one of the few words handed down to us from the Pictish times. A Monk in his writings (1170-1173) writes that in the Pictish language of Galloway the Official or the Head of a church was called Scollofthes. The "Ap" might indicate also that his father had been a minister. "Ap Scollofthes" meaning lison of the minister". They used this To-name when doing business with the church. Duncan was succeeded by his son, FERGUS.

20 th FERGUS McCAUGHAN was succeeded by his son, GILBERT.

iv

21st GILBERT McCAUGHAN c A.D. 1225-1290, the 4th Representative of his Name and Famil y is at least on one occassion referred to as Gilbert Askelok..Gilbert Scollofthes.. In 1291, his widow Wilhemina Askeloc (sic) was granted by Edward lst, King of England, a protection sine termino to proceed to Cumberland, England. Since Cumberland is mentioned several times in this family's history it is more than possible that she was a Briton from Cumberland. They had issue amongst others, the eldest son and heir, ROLAND.

22nd ROLAND McCAUGHAN c A.D. 1255-1307, (sometimes spelled the name McGachan), Del Counte de Wigtown and also of Barmagachan, Kirkcudbrightshire and Rathcachan (Rath n Eac'ain) the 5th historical Head of his House, the 10th MacEachain Mor, and the 5th Feudal Baron, in 1291 A.D., Roland and his eldest son, Hector, are recorded by their official name of Askeloche (sic) when they served on the Assize Jury at Berwick-On- Tweed.

Roland is registered on the part of the Ragman Roll compiled from Wigtownshire, when he swore fealty and rendered homage to Edward lst, King of England, and evidently attended the Parliment of Berwick, held from the 28th of August to September 16th 1296. Roland's seal of Arms as appended to the Ragman Roll and still evident are..Or a dexter Hand apaumee and Erect Cules.. (cropped red, right hand on Or, or white). In 1300 Roland and his wife, Katerina (Kathleen) granted a Charter of some of their land at Barmagachan for the Parish of Borgue, Kirkcudbrightshire. In this charter (still evident) Roland's Family name and again his official name of Askelaoches (sic) are both used. The many times the To- name was used by members of these families establish beyond a doubt that their forefathers were the Heads or Chief Officials in the Native or Pictish Church in their domain. It is also intimated that in Roland's time, he also held certain parts of his Mother's land near Allordale, Cumberland, England, and there was referred to as the lst Lord Baron of McCaughan. Because of his active participation in the Scottish war for Independance on the side of Robert the Bruce, Roland's lands in Wigtownshire were forfeited to the English Crown. He was killed during battle fighting alonside King Robert 1st. Roland and Lady Katerina McCaughan had with other issue, two sons. HECTOR and FERGUS.

FERGUS McCAUGHAN, the younger, a name child of Fergus, Lord of Galloway 1136-1161 A.D., was also registered on the Ragman Roll, when he was a Representative from Wigtownshire, he paid homage at Berwick-On-Tweed on the 28th of August 1295. Fergus is recorded as Fergus Askolo (sic).

23rd SIR HECTOR McCAUGHAN, c 1270-1335 A.D. on the 28th August 1296, he was also registered on the Ragman Roll as a Representative from Wigtown and under the To-name of Ascoloc (sic). His seal of arms as evidence by the Ragman Roll are ..AZURE two lions in pale passant to dexter OR..and his seal is ensigned "Sigillo Hectori Ascoloc".

Sir Hector was imprisoned for causing the death of Cutbert of Galloway while he fought alongside Robert the Bruce on the side of the English, prior to the Scottish War for independence. In 1302 A.D. Hector was pardoned by Robert the Bruce when he became King Robert 1st of Scotland, and Hector was made King Roberts Private Standard Bearer carried the Kings flag everywhere the King went, quite an honor.)

In 1307 A.D., Sir Hector married LADY FLORENC E de WIGTOWN. They were succeeded by their son, LAUGHLIN.

24th LAUGHLIN McCAUGHAN, succeeded hi s father in 1335 A.D., as the 7th historical and 24th traditional Representative of his Family . His successor was his son, MAURICE.

v.

25th MAURICE McCAUGHAN, sometimes Mauric e McGaychyn, the 8th Laird Barone, is recorded in 1377 A.D., an English safe pass at the request of Archibald Douglas, Earl of Galloway. It is surmis ed that he was visiting kin in Cumberland, England. Maurice was succeeded by his son, DUNCAN.

26th DUNCAN McCAUGHAN, was succeeded by his son, ROLAND.

27th ROLAND McCAUGHAN, b.c. 1376, became on the death of his father, believed to have bee n in 1409 A.D., the 11th Representative of his name and Family and the 10th Laird Barone. His era saw a move of the family from being large land owners to comparatively lesser owners at Glenluce, Wigtownshire. Roland had with other issue, a son and successor, FERGUS.

28th FERGUS McCAUGHAN (2), b.c. 1406, and of Corsmacachan at Glenluce, and Kirklands and the first of Callones (sometimes Gallones) all in Wigtownshire, he was the Ilth Laird Barone of McCaughan. In 1460, Fergus was in possession of the 33 shillings and 4 pence lands of Kirklands (now Kirkandrew), whereupon presently the stately monument erected in memory of Sir Andrew Agnew. In the same year, Fergus had the lands of Callones , in the Parish of Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire, pledged into his hands by Lord Gilbert Kennedy. Fergus died at Callones before 1470 A.D. leaving other issue, his wife, thought to be a Dickerson, and an eldest son, JOHN.

29th JOHN McCAUGHAN (1), b.c. 1423 at Corsmacachan, became the 2nd of Callones and the 12th Laird Barone on the death of his father. John is mentioned in the Carte Monialium de North Ber wick, as Johnne McCachyn. He was recorded as the Notary, 25th February 1485, issued by George Bish op of Galloway. John died c. A.D. 1499 and was succeeded by his son FERGUS.

30th FERGUS McCAUGHAN (3), the 3rd of Callones, Kirkmaiden Parish, Wigtownshire, is rec orded in the Register of the Great Seal of Scotlan d, vol 2, p. 2056, as a witness to a document dated 10 May 1490, and others. On the 9th June 1531, Fergus resigned as Parish Clerk, (the higest office bestowed by the Laity on one of its members) of his home Parish of Kirkmaiden, in the Mull of Galloway . Fergus died at Callones before 1535 A.D. leaving his wife, Margaret, the daughter of John Macgeouch and a large family of which his two eldest sons were: ANDREW and JOHN.

SIR ANDREW McCAUGHAN, the eldest, entered the church. In the Exchequer Rolls of Scotland, Vol. 12, p. 709, is registered that the Reverand Andrew McCachan was on the 8th of June 1506, appointed Rector of Armurchy. He passed the honors of being the Clan Head to his younger brother, John.

31st SIR JOHN McCAUGHAN (2) b. Callones, W igtownshire, became on the death of his father his s uccessor as the 4th of Callones, Wigtownshire, 14th Laird Barone of McCauhan. John was a Notary Public, is recorded as Sir John McGachand when at Crawford john on the 16th March, 1535. He evidently was the first of the family domiciled in the adjacent County of Ayr and at the Royal Burgh of Irvine, where his name appears on record dating from 1499 A.D. and where he died leaving issue amongst others, two sons: JOHN and JAMES.

SIR JAMES McCAUGHAN, the younger, was appointed in 1538 A.D. by the Crown and Rector of the Church of Kilblann (now Southend ) Mull of Kintyre, Argyllshire, in the Register of the Privy Seal of Scotland, Vol. 3, he is recorded as Sir James McGaughane and in local histories he is regarded as the Bishop and Abbot of this ancient Columbian Foundation.

32 nd SIR JOHN McCAUGHAN (3), born at Irvine, Ayrshire, succeeded his father before

vi.

1540 A. D. He was 15th Laird Barone or historical Head of the House of McCaughan and 32nd traditional Head. John (3) is on record as Sir John McGachan when on the 4th of October, 1540 at Edinbur gh, Scotland, he set out the rents for the upkeep of the now historic Parish Church of St. John the Baptist, Irvine. He is also mentioned under different spellings of the family name in "Muniments of the Royal Burgh of Irvine" dated up to 1542 A.D. where he was in possession of extensive property, some of which is mentioned in the records of St. Conwall. Kilblann, etc. John died c. 1570 at Irvin e, leaving issue of whom his successor, son ANDREW.

It is a coincidence that 425 years later and almost to the day, his namesake and direct descendant, Chevalier John Alexander McCaughan, performed the same duties as a Churchwarden in the Parish Church of Toronto, Canada, also named St John the Baptist.

33rd ANDREW McCAUGHAN, was succeeded by his grandson, ARCHIBALD. It is believed that his only son, named Alexander, must have died before his father-thus the honors passed to a grandson.

34 th ARCHIBALD McCAUGHAN, in 1598 A. D. got land on the Mull of Kintyre. His tenture of the lands were seemingly very troubled and temporary (land was lost in a war with Clan Donald). In 1600 A.D. the family left all and together with other related lowland families. They journeyed the eighteen miles across the North Channel into County Antrim, Ireland where they were treated royally and obtained lands from the Earl of Antrim. As public documents disclose this was the original family of the name recorded in Antrim, where seemly Archibald died leaving 8 sons, who in 1659 A.D. were recorded at the following places of residence all in north east Antrim and within a short distance of one another.

(1) JOHN McCAUGHAN (4) and of whom presently.

(2) ALEXANDER McCAUGHAN, of Ballyverdagh, Culfreigtrin Parish, Co. Antrim.

35th JOHN McCAUGHAN (4) b.c. 1600 in Scotland, succeeded his father and became the 2nd of Ballyverdagh, Glenshesk, nr. Ballycastle, County Antrim, Ireland. Ballyverdagh is sometimes recorded as Ballyberdagh, a place from the Gaelic meaning "Dunbardach" meaning Warden's fort of castle. Its fronting the east banks of the Shesk River, in Glenshesk, and descendants continued to live on these lands for almost 300 years. John (4) died at Ballyverdagh c. 1672, leaving his wife, Margaret, daughter of Archibald MacGillebride of Ferran and a son and heir, ALEXANDER.

36th ALEXANDER McCAUGHAN, recorded in early documents as Alexander McCahan, b.c. 1639, at Ballyverdagh, succeeded his father as 3rd of Ballyverdagh and the 19th Head or Representative of his House. Married Mary, daughter of Charles McVurrich (Curry) of Ferran, and died 1697, leaving three sons:

The following is taken from a report the late Chevelier John Alexander McCaughan, 43rd "Head of the house of McCaughan" prepared for the Heraldry of Ireland on the different ways he found the early families spelling our name in Scotland, Isle of Man, Ireland, and later in Canada, America, New Zealand and Australia. All stemming from the original Gaelic name "MacEachain". He felt they didn't keep all these spellings. Soon after the clans were broken up, a lot of the men were not educated and about the only place where their name was required was on church records. If you couldn't read or write, it was left to the church clerk to spell it like it sounded to him. This accounting for the Irish Gaelic spelling of the "Horse Lord" McQuuichin.

Auchanson -- McCaughin -- McGeaghan -- McCaughan (Galloway 1100) -- McGachen -- Cahanson -- McCaughan (Manx 1200) -- McGaychin -- Cackeon (Manx 1418) -- McCaghan -- McCaughern -- Caighan (Manx 1643-1745) -- McCahen (Ireland 1650) -- McCahan -- McKahan -- McKaighan (Manx 1200) -- McKeighan --Cagen (Manx 1630) -- McCaughran -- Kaighan (Ireland 1700) -- Kaighan (Manx 1611) -- McEachain (Galloway 1100) -- McKahon -- McKeechan -- MacGachan -- McGagen -- McKeuchane -- MakGachane -- McGachand -- McKechan -- MacAychin -- McGaichan -- McKeuchane -- McAchin -- McGauchane -- McKaghan -- Mcakeon -- McGaughan -- McKachan -- Mccachan -- McGeachan -- McKaychin -- McGathan -- McCaghan (Galloway 1150) -- McGahan (Ireland 1700) -- McQuuichin (1528)

It will be noticed from the above that some members of the family living on the Isle of Man have since 1418 A. D. dropped the prefix "Mac" entirely.

Time and distance does not permit us to fully research and determine when a branch of the family extended into the Kingdom of Man, however we can state that the surname, again variously recorded, appears in the early chronicles of that island, The Chronican Mannial. Also especially in the north there are places named after the family. Three of which are Villa McKeon and Ballakeighan in the Parish of Arbory and Ballakaighan, Parish of German. I would venture to guess that the name was carried to Man by one or more of the family, probably as a member of the Scottish Army, who remained to fill some position. Some items belonging to the family can now be found in the Manx Museum in Ballakaighan dating back to the Bronze Age.

In Canada, the immigrants coming from County Antrim, Ireland, we found using the spelling McCaughan and McKaughan and directly from Scotland, McEachain, variously recorded. In America, immigrants coming from County Antrim, Ireland, we have found using the spelling McKaughan, McCaughan, McCaughn, McKeighan, McCaughin and McGahan. From these names, many have Americanized the name to McCoin, McKoin, McGahan, McConn, and McCann. The immigrants coming directly from Scotland to America we have found use the spellings MacEachain. McEachain, McEachin, McEachan, and McEachren. In Australia and New Zealand, the immigrants from County Antrim, Ireland spell the name McKaughan and McCaughan.

John A. McCaughan, Esq.

There is a possibility that if you hire a genealogist in Ireland, you will get wrong information. Chevalier John A. McCaughan explains: One of the McCaughan girls of Northern Ireland married a man of the Royal Stuart line and they had one son. This son was a lawyer in England who became quite wealthy and never married. When he died, which JOhn did not give a date but I surmised it has been since the late 1920's when the courthouse at Dublin was burned. He left a certain amount of money to each McCaughan who could prove their relationship within four generations to his mother. All the McCaughan's got busy working on their line. One of them hired a professional genealogist to work the line back as far as they could go. This genealogist did okay until he got to the early 1600's, not knowing they had come from Scotland to Ireland at that time. He had found that some of the lines now spell the name "McCahan" so he put 2 and 2 together and got 6. He connected the family with an "O'Cahan's" of Ireland with the same name. He recorded his information with the Ulsters so everyone who wrote asking about the McCaughan's were given this information. Chevalier John was able to correct the main source but there is no telling how many people were given the wrong information before he did and how many people they have passed it on to so, If you hear or see that we are connected to the O'Cahan's of Ireland, this is not true. When the O'Cahan's were doing their thing in Ireland, we were in Scotland. Of all the confusion of all these different spellings, possibly it would have been better if we had all kept the original name, MacEachain.

THE IMMIGRANTS

ARCHIBALD McKAUGHAN, SR. and REBECCA BOYD

BORN:COUNTY ANTRIM, IRELAND AR0UND 1715

CAME TO AMERICA 1747

PENNSYLVANIA TO TENNESSEE

**********

1. ARCHIBALD McKAUGHAN, SR.: born around 1715 in County Antrim, Ireland. He married REBECCA BOYD, the only child of Alexander Boyd of "Glass Island" county Antrim, around 1733. Alexander Boyd manufactured glass. He owned a manor house known for its grandeur. He was a man of wealth and in his will he stated, fifty years after his death, lawyers were to go to America to see if they could find a certain number of descendants of Rebecca Boyd McKaughan. If that number was found, they would share in his estate. If that number was not found, the estate would go to Ireland. I heard they were in North Carolina and from the Joab Brooks Letter, page 6, we know they were in Texas but as far as I could find out, they never went to Tennessee and Kentucky, where most of the McKaughan's were. We know the estate was turned over to Ireland and it was sold to a Doctor who made an orphan home for boys, which it still is. That is probably for the best.

Archibald and Rebecca McKaughan and two sons: Archibald, Jr, age 12, and Hugh (1), age 4, came from County Antrim, Ireland to America in 1747. They settled in Pennsylvania, believed to be Cumberland County, where they lived a great number of years and while there, two daughters were born: Margaret and Rebecca (2). Both of their sons were in the Revolutionary War and they both married while in Pennsylvania. Archibald, Jr. to Jane Mercer and Hugh (1) to (1) Charlotte Blake. After the war, all of Jane Mercer's brothers and all the McKaughan's went to a territory which was West Carolina at the time and is now Sullivan County, Tennessee. There is no mention of Archibald (1) or Charlotte Blake McKaughan going so we feel they Could have died while in Pennsylvania. There seemed to have been quite a drive of the Revolutionary veterans to that area at that time so they could have been given land there from the Government for their services. They cleared their land, built their cabins, made peace with the is Indians and put out their crops, which were plentiful since it was virgin land. Carolina was having so many problems with their citizens on the east side of the Smokies that they were not paying any attention to what went on west of the Smokies so these families were pretty much on their own. After a few years, they decided to form a little state and call it Franklin. There are two trains of thought here.

History books tells us that they could not take care of Franklin so asked Carolina to take it over. if you ask anyone around that area, they are quick to tell you that they had been told by their forefathers that Carolina heard about them forming a state of Franklin so sent her militia to take it over. Whatever, this made a lot of these families mad so they asked their friend and neighbor, Daniel Boone, to lead them through the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky which was being formed into a state at that time. By this time, Hugh (1) McKaughan had remarried to (2) Nancy Ingram, the daughter, Margaret, had married Joseph Birdwell and the daughter, Rebecca (2), had married Roger Browning, all in Franklin. Archibald McKaughan, Jr. took his family, along with all the Mercer brothers, to Pulaski County, Kentucky. After the state of Tennessee was formed, the rest of the McKaughan's, and their families, plus the aged mother, Rebecca Boyd McKaughan, moved to what is now Jackson County, Tennessee, where she died at the age of around 100 in 1816. She is buried in, one of the tomb type graves in the Rob Draper Cemetery near Gainesboro, Tennessee. More about this under the chapter on Hugh MccKaughan (1)

Archibald McKaughan (1) was one of the- first we found to come to America from County Antrim, Ireland, and the only one who used the "McKaughan" spelling. It is also his line who did most of the, name changing around 1870. Several McCaughan's

1.

came from County Antrim later and since they had not lived here as long as Archibald's line, and since they still had ties to the motherland, few of them changed the spelling of the name. McCaughan is the most popular way to spell the name in the old country. I was told by Chevalier John Alexander McCaughan that McKaughan and McCaughan are both the same name and if they came from County Antrim, Ireland, they descend from one of the 8 sons of the original Archibald McCaughan who went from Scotland to Ireland in the early 1600's. During the uprising in Northern Ireland in the 1920's, the IRA burned the courthouse in Belfast so about all the records left there now are the church records. Had they stayed Church of Ireland (Anglican), their records are complete, but we know our McKaughan's changed to Presbyterian during their drive over there and something happened to the first record books of the Presbyterian Church in Northern Ireland. We feel the name was spelled McKaughan because a few years after our Archibald McKaughan came to America, there was a John McKaughan who went to Australia from County Antrim, Ireland. I feel these two men were from the same family. Whether all the McKaughan men left Ireland, they eventually had only girl descendants, or they changed their names back to McCaughan, I don't know, nor do we know why they used "K" instead of "C" but I am told there are none in Northern Ireland today spelling it "McKaughan".

In my files I recorded this Archibald as Archibald McKaughan (1) since he was the first Archibald to come to America. Their children:

THE IMMIGRANTS

Children of Archibald McKaughan, Sr. and Rebecca Boyd: ARCHIBALD JR., HUGH (1), MARGARET, REBECCA (2)

2-1 ARCHIBALD McKAUGHAN, JR.: born 1735, County Antrim, Ireland. He came to America with his parents in 1747, at the age of 12 years. They settled in Pennsylvania, believed to be Cumberland County. He married JANE MERCER, daughter of Moses and LaGrelda Forrester Mercer from Scotland to Pennsylvania. Little is known about Moses and LaGrelda after they came to America. The Mercer cousins who have worked on that line believe Moses was related to General Hugh Mercer, they both came to America around the same time and Jane's brothers always seemed to be near General Hugh.

History books tells us General Hugh Mercer was the private doctor to the King of Scotland and after their war with England for their Independence the King was exiled and so was General Hugh Mercer. Whether Moses Mercer was also exiled or not, we do not know. General Hugh settled in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania (Mercersburg was named after him). When the revolutionary war broke out, Hugh Mercer enlisted as a doctor and was commissioned to General. He was in many battles in Pennsylvania and was sent to Princeton, New Jersey where he was killed. Two of Jane Mercer's brothers were with him in Princeton at the time.

Archibald McKaughan, Jr. served as a private eighth class, Captain Jack's Sixth Company, Fourth Battalion, Cumberland County Militia, according to a patrol return dated 24 October 1782 (page 313, Vol. 6, 5th series, Pennsylvania Archives). He is recorded as Arch McCaughran. I feel the name was written by a clerk and the clerk wrote it "McC", rather than "McK" because Arch Jr's signature on a land survey in 1804 and he spelled the name McKaughan. The "r" in the name indicates the Gaelic pronunciation and the "r" the roll. His name is recorded Archibald McKaughan on the D.A.R. Patroitic Records, cleared 9 November 1933 by Zula Moore Nelson, Wichita Falls, Texas. There are, however, several errors in her report.

After the revolutionary war, all the Mercer brothers and all the McKaughan's regathered in a territory which is now Sullivan County, Tennessee. Around 1800, when Kentucky was formed, all the Mercer brothers and families and Archibald McKaughan, Jr. and family went to Pulaski County, Kentucky. Archibald's land was 15 miles west of Somerset, west of Nancy about 2 miles, and one mile south on road #1664. The King Creek mentioned on the survey is now named Sputter Creek. The land is now owned by Mr. Glen Roy. Their graves are in the pasture on a hill, among a clump of trees, between the two barns. It is hard to tell just how many graves there are for the cattle have trampled them, and there are only two marked with names. One, a soldier recorded Caughran (no date), appears to be a grandson, and the other a baby recorded as Caughron (1853). 1 have neither of these on my files. If the soldier was the father of the baby, it appears he had dropped the prefix "Mc" from the name and

3.

used "C", as we find them doing sometimes during this time, and again the "r" which indicates the name was still pronounced the Gaelic way, the "r" being the roll in the name. In the early days, Pulaski County, Kentucky was quite large, in fact, it went to the Tennessee border. They built sub-courthouses so the men could get to a courthouse in the wintertime when the river was frozen and roads icy. One such sub-courthouse was built at Monticello, Kentucky. Later, when Pulaski County was divided into several counties, Monticello became the county seat of Wayne County but it appears they kept all the old records so if you look for information, you have to work both courthouses. The Wolf Creek Dam has been built between Archibald McKaughan, Jr's land and Monticello so you have to go to Somerset and around but at the time he lived there. I was told by Mr. Roy that they would take a skiff across the river. It is 7 miles from Monticello and 15 miles and many hills to Somerset. This explains why we found more information in Wayne County on them than Pulaski County.

Their children we found doing business in the courthouses and in old letters mentioned (there are possibly more who married out of the county) are:

4-1 JOAB BROOKS (3): (His grandfather and an uncle were also named JOAB), in North Carolina) born 1794 in Tennessee. Joab (3) moved to Scott County, Arkansas, "Contintial History of Arkansas" titled A.C. Brooks, says Joab was married in Tennessee. His children were born there. Joab was followed to Arkansas by his son, Jacob Brooks, who was a farmer and a Methodist Episcopal minister. Joab died there in 1884.

Joab Brooks (3) was the author of the following letter and sworn statement we found that has helped us so much in our research. The letter was an answer to kin in Texas (Jane Mercer Brooks Simpsons descendant) telling them the Lawyers from Ireland had not been to see him and the sworn statement, to distinguish Joab's relationship to Alexander Boyd, Rebecca Boyd McKaughan's father, in Ireland. Found in "Ancestorial Study of Four Families" by Emily Griffith Roberts.

LETTER

Waldron, Scott County Arkansas

December 24th 1873

Dear Sir:

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of yours written at Sulphur Springs, Hopkins County, Texas, and proceed to answer all the questions propounded so far as I can.

1st: Alexander Boyd, who lived near Belfast, Ireland, was in possession of the estate as far as I know, and I know nothing of his death.

My great-grandfather, Archibald McKaughan married Rebecca Boyd, daughter of Alexander Boyd, she being his only heir; and when the eldest son Archibald McKaughan, Jr., was twelve years old and Hugh, the second son being four years old, they set sail for America, and susposed they landed in United States at New York, and from thense proceeded to the State of Pennsylvania where they had two daughters born: Margaret and Rebecca. There my grandfather, Archibald McKaughan, Jr. married Jane Mercer, and there my mother was born in 1775. From thense the relatives emigrated to Holston River, East Tennessee where my mother, Rebecca McKaughan, married John D. Brooks (my father) and I, the first child was born in 1795.

My mothers aunt, Margaret, married Joseph Birdwell in East Tennessee about the year of 1793 and her sister, Rebecca, married Roger Browning about the same time, and their brother Hugh, married a woman by the name of ________ Ingram when he was an old man.

5

My greal-grandmother, Rebecca Boyd, died on, or about the year of 1816 (about 100 year old) in Jackson County, Tennessee. Any other or further information of the desired, address me. The family Bible, I expect is in the possession of the Birdwell family who resided in Jackson County, Tennessee, the last I knew of them.

Give my respect to my friends and relatives, and accept a due portion for yourself.

Yours respectfully,

Joab Brooks

STATE OF ARKANSAS

COUNTY OF SCOTT

SWORN STATEMENT

I, Joab Brooks, a citizen of Scott County, Arkansas, aged 79 years, being one of the claimants of the estate of Alexander Boyd, deceased (late of Belfast, Ireland) do solemnly swear that I am the only living son of Rebecca Brooks, deceased, whose maiden name was Rebecca McKaughan and a daughter of Archibald McKaughan, Jr. That my grandfather was aforesaid Archibald McKaughan, Jr., was the son of my great-grandfather whose name was also Archibald McKaughan, deceased.

I got all my information from my great-grandmother, Rebecca Boyd, with whom I was personally and intimately aquainted for ten or twelve years before her death which took place in Jackson County, Tennessee, I think about 1816. I was almost twenty years of age at the time. She often told me that she was an heiress of the said Alexander Boyd, who died in Ireland. She also gave me the following information: That she married Archibald McKaughan near Belfast, Ireland contrary to her father's will; that she and her husband remained in that country (in and around Belfast) for some fourteen years after their marriage and until their eldest son was about twelve years old, after which time a difficulty arose between her husband and her father, which led to she and her husband coming to America.

I learned from my great-grandmother, Rebecca Boyd, that her father was the owner of a manor house near Belfast, Ireland, which she said was noted for its granduer, and often termed the "Glass House", on account of part of the walls being solid mirror (at least this is the way I understand it from her statements).

My great-grandmother, Rebecca Boyd, and her husband, landed in New York when they came to the United States. I do not know how long they remained in New York. They moved to Pennsylvania where they remained a great many years, and there Archibald McKaughan, Jr., (who was my grandfather) intermarried with Jane Mercer, of whom my mother was born in the year of 1775.

6

My mother moved from Pennsylvania to what is now East Tennessee, it being a territory at the time, and at which place my mother was married to my father, John D. Brooks, in 1793. My mother died November 8th 1812 in Jackson County, Tennessee.

Her children were:

---- JOAB

---- JANE MERCER

---- SARAH BLOCKER

---- REBECCA DEMAX

---- MARY HUDSON

---- WINNIFRED CHAPEL

---- CATHERINE HARRIS

---- ARCHIBALD HARPER

This is all that I can recall concerning my relationship to the family of Alexander Boyd.

Given under my hand in Scott County, Arkansas, this 8th day of October, 1874.

Joab Brooks

Sworn to Louis L. Hymen, County Clerk of Scott County, Arkansas.

Parents: Archibald McKaughan Sr., and Rebecca Boyd

Children of Archibald McKaughan, Jr. and Jane Mercer: REBECCA (3), GEORGE (1), HUGH (2), FORRESTER (1), ALEXANDER (1), JOHN (1), GRISELLA.

3-2 GEORGE McKAUGHAN (1): born in Pennsylvania. Went to the territory which is now Sullivan County, Tennessee and then to Pulaski County, Kentucky with his parents. He married PEGGY CALDWELL 9 November 1801, one of the first couples to marry in Wayne County after Pulaski County was divided and Wayne County was formed. Their original license can be found in Wayne County. It is recorded under the name of McGahan, however, if you turn it over to where George signed it, he used the McKaughan spelling. This indicates to me that the name must have been pronounced McGahan in Kentucky from the start. All their decendanls but one that we have found now spell the name McGahan, pronouncing it Mc Gann, which isn't too far off from the Gaelic pronounciation of the name. Peggy was the daughter of John Caldwell of Wayne County.

George McKaughan (1) was a farmer. The survey office in Somerset, Kentucky, shows him owning 125 acres of land on the west side of Sand Creek. In the Pulaski County, Kentucky tax list index 1799 -1829 records George Mc Kaughan under various spellings, paying taxes through 1821. Their children were:

----4-1 JOHN McKAUGHAN (2)

----4-2 WILLIAM McKAUGHAN

----4-3 GEORGE McKAUGHAN (2)

----4-4 MARY (Polly) McKAUGHAN

----4-5 EDWARD McKAUGHAN

**********

4-1 JOHN McKAUGHAN (2): born abt. 1802, Virginia, married (1) RHODA ROBERTS 22 July 1820. Married (2) SALLY TARTER 13 April 1828. We found these records in the Marriage Book at Pulaski Co Courthouse, Somerset,KY He must had moved, had only female heirs, or possibly changed his name to McGahan for we found no descendents of his with the McKaughan name in the area now, unless he changed his name to McGahan also.

*********

4-2 WILLIAM McGAHAN: born in Kentucky. Married SARAH "SALLIE" HAILE (Hale) from Russell County, Kentucky, the daughter of Rev. Labon Haile, a Presbyterian minister from Russell Springs, Kentucky. William and Sallie moved to Jackson County, Tennessee where his uncle, Hugh McKaughan (1) lived. William got into a fight with a man named Gentry over land and they fought until they killed each other. Sallie took her children back to Russell Springs, Kentucky to her father's home, where the children were raised. This home of the Rev. Labon Haile's burned in 1989. It was a landmark of the area. Sallie is found in the 1870 census of Ganes, Pulaski Co., KY living with her daughter Nancy. She was listed as Sarah McGahan born Virginia. Their children were:

----5-1 LABON (Laben, Laban) McGAHAN

----5-2 MARY "POLLY" McGAHAN

----5-3 NANCY JANE McGAHAN

**********

5-1 LABON McKAUGHAN/McGAHAN: born 14 January 1829, Waterboro, Pulaski County, Kentucky. Married ABIGALE GADBERRY 8 December 1848, Russell County, Kentucky. She, the daughter of John Green Gadberry and Juanna Lloyd, from North Carolina to Kentucky. Labon was a farmer. He was killed in a cabin fire 11 January 1912 near Jabez, Russell Co., Kentucky. While he was in the Mexican War, his commanding Officier was a gentleman from Ireland to America named McGahan. This man knew that McGahan and McKaughan was the same name and one of the spellings used in Ireland. Since it was already pronounced McGahan in Kentucky, Leban started using the McGahan spelling. All his decendants we have found now spell the name "McGahan". Abigale was born 27 December 1828 in North Carolina, died 3 June 1904. They are buried in the Military Springs Cemetery, Jabez. There appears to have been more than one Gadberry family who came from North Carolina to Russell County, Kentucky. No doubt, from the unusual name, they were related. Their children:
