The Green Lanterns are an intergalactic police force of sorts that are run by the ancient Guardians of the Galaxy from the planet Oa. The Green Lanterns' major tool is their power ring, which can do what ever its wearer wishes, except to anything of the color yellow (a safeguard that no one lantern shall become too powerful). These rings are powered by a giant lantern shaped battery on Oa. Each sector of the universe has a Green Lantern. The Green Lantern of Earth was Hal Jordan, who is said to be the greatest Lantern ever. Hal Jordan became a Lantern when an alien Lantern named Abin Sur crash landed on Earth and gave Hal his costume and ring. With these, Hal fought evil on Earth and throughout the cosmos as the superhero Green Lantern. Besides being a member of the Green Lantern Corps, Hal was also a member of the Justice League of America. All this changed when Green Lanern's hometown, Coast City, was destroyed by a cyborg Superman. Hal Jordan was driven insane by this. Hal used his power ring to resurrect Coast City, but the power demand was too great for his ring. Hal defeated and destroyed other Green Lanterns, the Guardians, and the central battery on Oa for more power. He became the most powerful force in the DC universe, taking on supervillians, as well as heroes. When the Earth was threatened by the Sun Eater, Hal Jordan (now called Parallax) sacrificed his own life to destroy this threat to Earth and rekindle the Sun. Hal Jordan's final words were "In brightest day, in darkest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil's might, BEWARE MY POWER...." A memorial service was held for Hal Jordan in Green Lantern #81. "In brightest day, in darkest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil's might, BEWARE MY POWER....Green Lantern's Light." -Hal Jordan.
