Berlin Airlift

Ashland, Mass., a member of an air installations unit at
Tempelhof Air Force Base, is shown operating a caterpillar tractor during construction of a new runway at the Berlin
terminus of the airlift. The huge "cats" were used to crush the brick bubble which was used as the base for the new
runway.

Cpl. Claude Ramey of Joplin, Mo., and the 502nd engineers at Giessen, Germany was sent to Berlin on
temporary duty to help construct two new runway at Tempelhof Air Force Base. Here he is shown with the rock crusher he operates to crush rocks used in runways
and taxi strips.
