The Big Steamy Thing - the card game

This page is to keep you up-to-date regarding "The Big Steamy Thing", the card game inspired by and based on the songs of They Might Be Giants. As of this date, there are 101 cards and a working copy of the rules. Here are the official resources:

update! Version 2.0! - Finally, we're getting somewhere! There have been a few significant changes, check 'em out here.

Checklist of cards - just the card names, alphabetical by category
Card Guide - what every card does, also alphabetical by category
Rules - basic guide on how to play.
Song List - the official list of what song or songs each card is from.
Note: all of these are plain text files. While typing them, I rarely used "carraige returns" except to separate paragraphs and list items. To avoid unnecessary side-scrolling, you may want to download them and view them in the text editor of your choice, which would probably have a "word wrap" feature. If you choose to do this, here is a zip file of all the text resources above.

Here's the basic idea. With the card guide and the rules, you can easily make the cards yourself and play. If you don't feel like figuring out how to make your own cards, go to the bottom of the page to find out how to order a set. To make things a little easier, here's the complete details about how I made the cards. First of all, the software and hardware. I have Microsoft Publisher 97. I didn't pay for it, but it's not warez. I got it free from a consumer club called Club Z. My printer is a Hewlett Packard DeskJet 400. It has a handy manual feed in the back, like most good printers these days. I bought 10 packages of 3" x 5" index cards from a local business supplies store. Most of the time, you can get volume discounts at these stores. From scratch, I figured out the proper layout guides to print the cards one at a time. I created the cards individually, and saved them in 2 files of 50 cards each. I also saved the card back as a seperate file. If you have Publisher 97 or 98, you can get a zip file (895KB) of those 3 files here (I'm not sure if earlier versions of Publisher can read them).

Anyway, that's the story. If you can't do them yourself, or don't feel like it, you can send $5.00 to:

PO Box 20006
Summerside, PEI
C1N 5Z3
Canada

That 5 bucks will get you the complete set of 101 cards, the list, guide, rules, and card errata. Allow 2-3 weeks for delivery. Also, to get on the info list, email kipps@tmbg.org with the subject heading "STEAMY THING". If you have a specific card or rules question, email steamything@diamonds.antwerpen.com
