Midnight Cowboy


HOUR OF THE GUN 1967:

This was Jon Voight's first movie, and he portrays "Curly Bill Brocius". The film takes place during the days of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday, depicting that memorable scene at the OK Corral. It also stars James Garner and Jason Robards. It was directed by John Sturges and, should be available on video.

FEARLESS FRANK 1967:

I don't know much about his film, except that Jon Voight played the title role. It also starred Monique van Vooren, and was directed by Philip Kaufman. To the best of my knowledge this is not available on video.

WITHOUT HONOR 1967:

This is a little-known film about the west. Voight plays "Private Bill Mason", who's reassigned to the Cimarron Army. He then finds out that his estranged father is the post commander, and is very bitter. To rebel against his father, Voight joins the Dekkar gang, a group of thieves with the calvary on their trail. This movie also stars Andrew Duggan and Stuart Whitman. As far as I know this film is not avaiable on video.

OUT OF IT 1968:

This film is a comedy about a shy teen, who has a crush on a popular girl. Voight plays "Russ," the girls' boyfriend. He's a football jock who depicts a constant rivalry with shy kid throughout the film. It was directed by Paul Williams, and also stars Gretchen Corbett and Barry Gordon. As far as I know this film is not available on video.

MIDNIGHT COWBOY 1969:

Midnight Cowboy is a very controversial film, based upon the novel written by James Leo Herlihy that dealt with many disturbing issues for its time. Prostitution, drugs, and sex were among them, in fact at the time of it's release it was given an "X" rating!. This was changed to an "R" rating shortly after. Voight plays a drifer from Texas, "Joe Buck," who moves to New York hoping to make it as a hustler. His plans don't exactly work out, and he meets a crippled loner played by Dustin Hoffman. This is a very moving film about friendship and love. Directed by John Schlesinger, and co-stars Sylvia Miles and Brenda Vaccaro. This film is definitely available on video, I recommend the 25th Anniversary copy. It contains interviews with all the stars and filmakers that dealt with the movie, and it's a nice rememberance of this terrific film.

CATCH-22 1970:

This film is a satire of World War II, based upon the novel written by Joseph Heller. The main character is a soldier, played by Alan Arkin, who's trying his best to avoid the craziness of combat. Voight plays another soldier, "Milo Minderbinder," who trys to trade food for war supplies. The film was directed by Mike Nichols, and also stars Martin Balsam, Richard Benjamin, Anthony Perkins, and Art Garfunkel. This film is available on video.

THE REVOLUTIONARY 1970:

Unfortunately I don't know too much about this film except that Voight portrays the character "A." This film was directed by Paul Williams, and co-stars Robert Duvall, Mary Barclay, and Jennifer Salt. I don't believe this film is available on video either.

DELIVERANCE 1972:

Deliverance is a tale of four friends out to enjoy a peaceful canoe trip that turns out to be anything but! Voight stars as "Ed Gentry," a happily married man along for the adventure. The film is based upon a novel written by James Dickey, who also has a cameo in the film. Superb performances from the other stars, Burt Reynolds, Ned Beatty, and Ronny Cox. Directed by John Boorman, and is available on video.

THE ALL-AMERICAN BOY 1973:

Voight portrays "Vic Bealer" and stars in this film about a man who wants to be a boxer. This is a hard movie to find, but it is out there on video. It's a nice preview for one of Voight's later roles in which he plays another boxer. This film is dirceted by Charles Eastman, and also stars Carole Androsky, Anne Archer, and Ned Glass.

THE ODESSA FILE 1974:

The Odessa File is based upon the novel by Frederick Forsythe. Voight plays "Peter Miller," a German journalist who happens upon a diary written by a deceased Holocaust survivor. He becomes intrigued with what the diary holds, and is determined to find a secret file that may expose a group of former Nazis. This film was directed by Ronald Neame, and also stars Maximilian Schell, Mary Tamm, and Derek Jacobi. It is available on video.

CONRACK 1974:

This film is based upon the book, "The Water is Wide," by Pat Conroy. It's a true story about a teacher, Pat Conroy, played by Voight, who goes to a tiny island off the coast of South Carolina, to teach a class of black 5th-8th graders basically everything! "Conrack" is a beautiful movie, and you really get caught up with the characters in the story. The teacher's dedication is so strong, and it's really very touching to see the bond that forms between himself and the kids. This is one of my favorite Jon Voight films, and I would definitely recommend it to any loyal Voight fan. It's directed by Martin Ritt, and also stars Paul Winfield, Madge Sinclair, and Hume Cronyn. I think this movie might currently be out of print, but should be available to rent.

END OF THE GAME 1976:

This film based on a novel called, "The Judge and his Hangman," by Friedrich Durrenmatt. Voight plays "Walter Thschantz," one of two men involved in a murder some years ago. Now one has become a detective, the other a businessman. The detective ends up investigating the businessman in this mystery, I'm not sure which one Voight plays. It was directed by Maximilian Schell, and also stars Jacqueline Bissett, Martin Ritt, and Robert Shaw. To best of my knowledge this film is not on video.

COMING HOME 1978:

This is an emotional film about a wife whose husband goes to Vietnam, and a paralyzed Vietnam vet who find love. Voight plays "Luke Martin," a vet who was paralyzed, and now stuck in a VA hospital recuperating. At first he's very angry and frustrated by his injury, but when he gets to know a woman who volunteers at the hospital that all changes. The climax is a whirlwind of emotion when the woman's husband comes back from the war and confronts them. This is a terrific movie, and there's a strong message that goes with it. Voight won an Academy award from his performance, so it's definitely worth taking a look at! This film was directed by Hal Ashby, and also stars Jane Fonda, Bruce Dern, and Penelope Milford. It is available on video as well.

THE CHAMP 1979:

This is a tearjerker with Voight portraying "Billy Flynn," an old boxing champion trying to raise his son. It's been seven years since he's been in the ring, he now works at some horse stables in Flordia. His son's mother abandoned them both when he was a year old, and she re-enters the picture once again to see her son. Billy decides he has to make a comeback for his son, who idolizes him, calling him "Champ." This is a remake of the 1931 film of the same name, and it is very touching. It was directed by Franco Zeffirelli, and also stars Faye Dunaway, Ricky Schroeder, and Jack Warden. I believe this movie may be out of print, but should be easily accessable to rent.

LOOKIN' TO GET OUT 1982:

Voight plays "Alex Kovac," in this comedy he co-wrote about two gamblers from New York City who lose a substantial amount of money. They end up going to Las Vegas to redeem their losses, and the adventure begins! This film was directed by Hal Ashby, and also stars Ann-Margret, Burt Young, Bert Remsen, and Voight's daughter Angelina, has a tiny part. I believe this movie may also be out of print, but should be availble to rent.

TABLE FOR FIVE 1983:

This is a very heart felt movie about family and love. Voight plays "J.P. Tannen," a father of three children who's been in and out of their lives. Their mother is remarried, and they form a strong bond with the step-father. Tannen comes back into their lives to take them on a cruise trip in the hopes of building their relationships. While on the trip tragedy strikes that tests their love for one another, and it's very moving. This film was directed by Robert Lieberman, and also stars Richard Crenna, Marie-Christine Barrault, and Millie Perkins. This is available on video.

RUNAWAY TRAIN 1985:

This is a very intense and exciting film. Voight plays "Manny," one of two convicts who successfully break out of prison. They find their way to a train station, stowing away in one. Little do they know what awaits them when the engineer suddenly dies, and the train is travelling by itself at a very high speed! Voight was nominated a third time for an Academy award for his performance in this movie. It was directed by Andrei Konchalovsky, and also stars John P. Ryan, Rebecca De Mornay, and Eric Roberts who was also nominated for an Academy award. This is available on video.

DESERT BLOOM 1986:

This film is set in 1950 Las Vegas at the very start of the Atomic Bomb age. The main character is a thirteen year old girl named, "Rose," who is very smart. She lives with a mother who is oblivious to what's really going on most of the time, and a step-father, "Jack Chismore," played by Voight, who is abusive. There's also her sex-crazed aunt, and two sisters. This film was directed by Eugene Corr, and also stars Jobeth Williams, Ellen Barkin, and Annabeth Gish. This is available on video.

ETERNITY 1990:

This is one of my favorite Jon Voight films that raises questions like, "Do we get reborn? and Do we stay connected to the same people life after life?" Voight plays a duel role as "James/news anchorman and Edward/A prince from medevil times." His character is constantly questioning rebirth, and swears he remembers his past life and love. I recommend this movie to anyone who's a fan of Jon Voight's work, he co-wrote it! It was directed by Steven Paul, and also stars Armande Assante, Eileen Davidson, and Wilford Brimley. This film is available on video.

CHERNOBYL: FINAL WARNING 1991

This TV-movie is based on a true story about the disaster of a Nuclear power plant in Russia. Voight plays, "Robert Gale," a doctor who goes over to Chernobyl, Russia to help the wounded. It was directed by Anthony Page, and also stars Jason Robards, Sammi Davis, and Annette Crosbie. To the best of my knowledge this movie is not available on video.

THE SINKING OF THE RAINBOW WARRIOR 1992:

This film is based on a true story as well. Voight plays, "Peter Wilcox," the head of a Greenpeace boat that was bombed near the Auckland, New Zealand harbour. The film also goes into the investigation behind the bombing. It was directed by Michael Tuchner, and also stars Sam Neill and Bruno Lawrence. I don't believe this movie is available on video.

THE LAST OF HIS TRIBE 1992:

This film made for HBO is also based on a true story, recounting the life of the last known living Yahi Indian in 1911. Voight received a Golden Globe nomination for his performance as "Professor Albert Kroeber," fascinated with this indian. Kroeber's second wife wrote a book about their time together called "Ishi in Two Worlds." This film was directed by Harry Hook, and also stars Graham Greene, David Ogden Stiers, and Anne Archer. I do believe this is available on video.

RETURN TO LONESOME DOVE 1993:

This is a continuation of the popular Lonesome Dove miniseries starring Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones. Voight takes on the role of "Captain Call," who just got finished burying his long-time friend in Texas at the start of the film. He runs into a herd of wild mustangs and decides to take them to his ranch in Nebraska. With the help of two other rangers and a Mexican woman their adventure begins. I really enjoyed this movie, I thought Voight did an excellent job taking over the role of "Call" that Jones had played in the original. It was directed by Mike Robe, and has an all star cast including Barbara Hershey, Rick Schroeder, Oliver Reed, Louis Gossett, Jr., Nia Peeples, and Reese Witherspoon. This film is available on video.

THE TIN SOLDIER 1995:

This made for TV film is inspired by a short story written by Hans Christian Andersen. Voight plays a "Tin Soldier," statue who comes to life to help a young boy fight for his honor. This was Voight's first project as a director, and he does an excellent job! This movie also stars Dom DeLuise, Trenton Knight, and Ally Sheedy. This is available on video.

CONVICT COWBOY 1995

In Convict Cowboy Voight plays "Ry Weston," one of two convicts who form a bond due to their interests in the rodeo. It was directed by Rod Holcomb, and also stars Kyle Chandler and Mark Acheson. This is available on video as well.

HEAT 1995:

This is a very action packed film about a group of criminals who hit high money targets, and a team of cops who are out to get them. Voight plays "Nate," who helps the leader of the criminals pick his targets. This film was directed by Michael Mann, and has an all-star cast including Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore, Ashley Judd, and Natalie Portman. It is availabe on video.

MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE 1996:

This film is based on the original TV series of the same name from the 1960s. Voight plays "Jim Phelps," the leader of a team of agents in charge of recovering a list that contains secret information that could expose them. This film was a huge success at the box office, and helped launch Voight back into the public eye. It was directed by Brian De Palma, and also stars Tom Cruise, Emmanuelle Beart, Henry Czerny, Ving Rhames, Jean Reno, and Vanessa Redgrave. This film is definitely available on video.

ROSEWOOD 1997

This film is based on a true story about a little town in Flordia during 1923, that's ravaged by violence after a young white woman accuses a black man of rape. Voight plays "John Wright," a local storekeeper who helps save many black women and children. This is a very compelling drama, and such an important story to learn about. It was directed by John Singleton, and also stars Ving Rhames, Don Cheadle, Ester Rolle, and Michael Rooker. This film is available on video.

BOYS WILL BE BOYS 1997:

Voight plays "Lt. Palladino", a police detective. This is a comedy about two boys who are "home alone", only to be interrupted by their father's business rival. The boys then go on a mission to save their father's job, messing up anything that gets in their way, including their house! This film also stars Randy Travis, Julie Hagerty, and Dom Deluise. I'm not sure if it is yet available on video.

ANACONDA 1997

Andaconda is a disturbing adventure about a film crew in search of an ancient indian tribe in Brazil. Their trip turns into a nightmare after they rescue a "stranded" man obsessed with capturing a monstrous snake. Voight plays a classic villian named "Paul Sarone," who will stop at nothing to find the huge snake. This film was directed by Luis Llosa, and also stars Ice Cube, Jennifer Lopez, Eric Stoltz, and Owen Wilson. It is available on video.

U-TURN 1997:

U-Turn is a strange story about a man whose car breaks down in the desert, and is forced to stay in this bizarre town with bizarre people. Voight only has a small role playing a blind man living on the streets. This film was directed by Oliver Stone, and also stars Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, Jennifer Lopez, and Billy Bob Thorton. This film is available on video as of March 31, 1998.

MOST WANTED 1997:

This is an exciting film about an ex-marine who is on his way to be executed, when he is rescued and asked to join a secret group of men that are planning on assassinating the First lady. When it's all over they let him take the fall, and he's on the run to prove his innocence. Voight plays "Adam Woodward," a covert operations general, and head of the assassination plan. This film was directed by David Hogan, and also stars Keenen Ivory Wayans, Jill Hennessey, and Paul Sorvino. This will be available on video Februray 17, 1998!

JOHN GRISHAM'S THE RAINMAKER 1997:

This film is based upon the novel of the same name by John Grisham. A young lawyer on his first court case is out to prove an insurance company is committing fraud. Voight plays "Leo F. Drummond," the slimy lawyer for the insurance company. His performance in this movie is brilliant, and he was nominated for another Golden Globe as a result! This film was directed by Francis Ford Coppala, and also stars Matt Damon, Danny DeVito, Claire Danes, and Danny Glover. This film will be available on video June 2, 1998.

THE FIXER 1998

The Fixer recently aired on the Showtime network, March 8, 1998. Voight stars as, "John Killoran" a high powered attorney who helps people by "fixing" whatever problem they are in. After he suffers a near fatal accident, he decides to get out of the "fixing" business, which doesn't make certain people very happy. This film also stars Brenda Bakke, J.J. Johnston, and Karl Pruner. This film is available on video in the US.

ENEMY OF THE STATE 1998:

This film is now on video in the US. A man is in the right place at the wrong time, and winds up the target of an NSA team. Voight plays "Thomas Reynolds", the head of the NSA team with a deadly secret. It's directed by Tony Scott, and also stars Gene Hackman, Will Smith, and Loren Dean.

THE GENERAL 1998

Unfortunately not too much is known about this film yet either. I do know that Voight is playing a character named, "Inspector Ned Kenny," and that it also stars Brend Fricker and Brendan Gleeson. This film is based on the novel, "The General," written by Paul Williams VII, and is directed by John Boorman. This feature is now available on video in the US.

VARSITY BLUES 1999:

Varsity Blues will be released in the US on January 15, 1999. Voight plays "Bud Kilmer", the coach of a winning college football team. When his star quarterback is injured, Kilmer must rely on a new second-string player to take the team to the top. But in a town where football is highly regarded, that's not going to be an easy task. This film was directed by Brian Robbins and also stars James Van Der Beek and Scott Caan. This film is now available on video in the US.

NOAH'S ARK 1999:

Voight plays Noah in this mini-series, based on the classic story from the Bible with a 90s flair. All the actors involved did an incredible job, especially Voight! His perfomance was both geniune and heartfelt. This film also stars Mary Steenburgen, F. Murray Abraham, James Coburn and Carole Kane. This movie is now available on video in the US to rent of purchase.

A DOG OF FLANDERS 1999:

A Dog of Flanders is based on the classic book by Marie-Louise de la Ramee. Voight plays an artist named Michel LaGrande, who encounters a young boy whose dream is to become a great artist. This film was directed by Kevin Brodie and also stars Jack Warden, Cheryl Ladd, Jeremy James Kissner, and Jesse James. It is due out in US theaters August 27, 1999!
