Isabel Stevens with Raleigh International

My name is Isabel Stevens, from Southampton in England, and sometime soon I shall be taking part in a Raleigh International project. What is Raleigh International?

Developing People

Raleigh International aims to develop young people through challenging community and environmental work on projects and expeditions around the world.

Taking part in a Raleigh expedition changes people - horizons broaden and characters develop. Young people return home motivated and with a heightened awareness of their environment and of the needs of others. For many this means increased tolerance and confidence - many others look for ways in which to put their new found skills and experiences to good use and continue to work as volunteers at home and abroad.

Raleigh Overseas

Raleigh International organises 10 expeditions a year for 1,000 young people aged 17-25. Projects for 1996 include working with the Red Cross in Uganda to provide fresh water, promoting health education with the Save the Children Fund in Zimbabwe and maintaining wildlife reserves for rhino and orang-utan in Malaysia. All expeditions are planned three years in advance and many projects are completed over a number of years such as the building of the Godzi Health Clinic in Zimbabwe.

Protecting the Environment

Raleigh International Venturers contribute thousands of hours of labour each year to environmental projects in the UK and overseas. In many countries they work with the National Parks Authorities helping to protect endangered species and to conserve their natural habitats. They also work in support of environmental scientific research programmes.

Venturers might find themselves monitoring glacial movement in Chile to help assess the effects of global warming or carrying out dive surveys in Belize on the largest barrier reef in the western hemisphere, helping to monitor the damage caused by sediment deposition from the mainland.

Putting Something Back in the UK

Raleigh's network of Support Groups was initially set-up to provide support for Venturers returning from expedition. Over the years their importance has grown and they now organise and run the Pre-Expedition Training Weekends, provide invaluable assistance with the running of national events and give practical fundraising advice to Venturers. The 48 Support Groups in the UK also regularly carry out community and environmental projects on behalf of groups such as Age Concern, Mencap and the National Trust.

To take part in a Raleigh International expedition I need to raise £2,000. You can help me by supporting me in the various fundraising events I shall undertake. Those who offer sponsorship will be listed below:
