All great heroes require an arch enemy - Sherlock Holmes had
Moriarty,  Odysseus had Poseidon, Captain Ahab had his white
whale.  James Bond has one Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the founder of S.P.E.C.T.R.E.

Blofeld was born in Gdynia, Poland on May 28, 1908, to a Polish
father and Greek mother. He studied economics and political history
at the University of Warsaw, and then engineering and radionics at
the Warsaw Technical Institute.  At the age of 22, he started work in
an administrative post at the Ministry of Posts and Telegraphs. Here
he gained access to many secret communications, especially with
Poland on the verge of war.

This lead to his first scheme, selling this information to overseas
secret services. He soon moved to Sweden, and when it became clear which side was going to win the War, he began selling his
information to the Allies. He finished the War wealthy and with decorations from the British, Americans and French. He then slipped
away to South America, where he started to formulate the plans for S.P.E.C.T.R.E. -  "a private enterprise for private profit".

S.P.E.C.T.R.E.'s early exploits met opposition from a british secret
service agent by the name of James Bond.  Bond managed to spoil Blofeld's early plans to topple American rockets in 1962, as well as his attempt to obtain a Lektor decoder from the Soviets in 1963.

When S.P.E.C.T.R.E. crumbled in 1967, Blofeld tried a private scheme
to claim the title of Comte de Bleauchamp in the mountains of
Switzerland.  Bond foiled this plot too, resulting in Blofeld's murder
of Tracy Bond, 007's bride.

With Bond now out for vengeance, Blofeld began having other
people physically altered to look like him.  His hope was that one of
these others would be killed in his place.  Unfortunately, Bond
managed to eliminate the impostors, as well as ruin Blofelds newest scheme.  While attempting to escape from an exploding oil rig,
Blofeld was injured, a wound that left him paralyzed from the waist
down.

In 1981, Blofeld appeared again, this time bound to a wheelchair.
While attempting to seek his revenge on Bond, he was dropped into
a 400 foot industrial chimney.  Although his fate was unconfirmed,
Blofeld is assumed to have died in this unfortunate accident.

However, Blofeld's cat was reported to have survived its master's fate.  Since then, there have been numerous alleged sightings.  It is
unknown whether or not we have seen the last of the only remaining S.P.E.C.T.R.E. agent.
