DIZZY    DIRECTIONS

· This activity is a done over the course of a few class sessions and is based on hand signals.
· I am not a big fan of the whistle in physical education class, while I feel it is necessary in some circumstances, other options exist. The use of hand signals is one such alternative.
· The signals or symbols are used in a variety of ways including control, setting of formations, and for self-esteem/class morale.
· I generally spread out teaching the number of symbols over several classes touching on previous signs while adding new ones.
· The first category is the most fun, cheers.
· The second group is formations.
· The third division being control.

· Once the students have the symbols down we are ready to play Dizzy Directions.
 1. In our roll formation I show the students a symbol/signal and ask them to execute it. I usually use spread out first.
 2. As soon as most of the students have accomplished this one give congratulations!! *(some of the students will keep scattering just remind them to find a place and sit.) Try the 2 hand cheer, to celebrate.
3. Try out each of the signs being used once with the teacher as the leader.
4. Allow a reasonable time for those students which might be less secure.
5. I usually speed up the game at this point. Try three or four fairly fast ones.
6. Reassure the class that you expect that there will be some mistakes and that is okay.
7. Next I choose a volunteer to give the class a symbol to follow. Explain that the student is now the teacher.
8. Repeat at a moderate pace at first, switching students frequently.
9. As confidence builds you can once again increase the speed.
10. The students will enjoy the movement and remember the symbols with use.
11. If all students do not get a turn i make a note and ask them if they would like to volunteer in future classes.
