Mary, Queen of Scots
At fifteen she married the future Francis II of France, who unexpectedly succeeded to the throne in 1559, but died a year later. Mary's marriages produced only one child and little happiness. Her second marriage to Lord Darnley ended after 18 months when he was mysteriously killed. Almost immediatedly, she married the earl of Bothwell, who, fled to Denmark a few weeks later. He was incarcerated for years at Dragsholm.
Mary Queen of Scots, came to England to escape Protestant uprisings in Scotland. Elizabeth had Mary imprisoned for 19 years, and never met her cousin. Mary spent nearly half of her ife in captivity in England before her execution. During this time, Mary kept plotting against Elizabeth. Elizabeth did not want to have Mary killed, but she finally had no choice, and Mary was executed in 1587.
James, Mary Queen of Scots' son by Darnley, united the crowns of England and Scotland in 1603.
