South East Asia, home to more than a billion living souls, practicing dozens of religions, Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Jainism, and Judaism to name a few. They come from vastly varied cultures and races, some natives and some coming from from Central Asia, Persia and Middle East. Understandably these people speak hundreds of different languages and dialects. But living together they have to communicate with
each other and the language serving as a bridge, is URDU.
Urdu started with the advent of Islam in the
area, muslim armies had people from Arabia, Persia, Central Asia and Turkey. These people communicated in a mixed language containing words from each one of their languages, this was the beginning of Urdu. With time it grew to include local languages, and become the communicating medium. It had its problems, some associating it with muslim rulers to make hindus vary of it. Urdu was also called Reekhta, even up to the last century. Hindi
a spin off of Urdu, has mostly the same vocublary and is spoken the same way, but its written in a different script.
The vastness and depth of Urdu is amazing, having its roots in so many different languages like Arabic, Turkish, Persian, and also in so many rich and varied cultures. The Urdu Vocublary has a word for every shade of emotions, it gives a different level of meaning to the poetry and prose written in it. The beauty and elegance of Urdu is something to be appreciated and enjoyed.
