Emu Farming

The emu has been an Australian resident for about 80 million years or so. Emus were first exported from Australia in the 1930's, ‘40's and ‘50's as an exotic zoo animal. In 1960 the emu was declared Australia's national bird and was banned from future exportation. Emus that are non-Australian residents today are mostly farmed or zoo exhibits. They are typically bred to ensure good quality of stock. Only top quality birds are allowed to propogate the next generation; all others should be processed. As emu product consumption increases, emu farming will also increase. Canadians are discovering and coming to accept this healthy trend.
