PROFILE
Son of Brisbane Bullets coaching legend Brian Kerle Simon was never far away from the sport growing up. He grew up in Melbourne and showed his skills as he grew up playing in various representitive teams. When Father Brian went to Brisbane to caoch the Bullets Kerle new who he was going to play for. Simon joined the Brisbane Bullets in 1988 playing with a team that included guards Leroy Loggins, Ron Radliff and Darren Perry. So the young Kerle didn't get a lot of court time. He rejoined the team in 1992 and was the secong guard of the bench. Playing under Brian Kerle Simon had opportunities but when the club fired Brian they fired Simon. A lot of people around the league considered that a very unproffesional move when Kerle had had a good season and gave the club no reson to fire him. He averaged 10.7ppg, 5.0apg and 3.2rpg. He also averaged over 1 steal per game. More dissapointment followed for Simon as he spent the entire 1993 season warming Sth East Melbourne's bench. He then got a call from Geelong Supercats head coach Jim Calvin and he decided to play for Geelong. He played the sixth man role for the Supercats plaing 3o minutes a game and scoring 11.4ppg. Then came Kerle's break out season, in 1995 he scored 18.1ppg and claimed the starting off guard spot for the Supercats. Then came a coaching change in Geelong with Ian Stacker taking over from Jim Calvin and Kerle continued his improvement. But it was a sad year for the team and organization as the Geelong Supercats were cut from the league. However Kerle's future looked a lot brighter, he was in demand from a lot of teams, he talked to a few but it was a talk to Shane Heal that convinced Kerle he should sign with the Suns. Heal said that playing with Derek Rucker will make you a better player. So Kerle went to Townsville and had a very productive season averaging just under 20ppg including a 49 point game against the Kings in Sydney. He missed out on All Star selection and missed out on the Boomers tour of America, that many feel he should have been on. He will be back with the Suns next season. .
