PROFILE

Ben Melmeth is a promising Young Centre for the Newcastle Falcons who some belive can make it all the way to the NBA. Melmeth returned to the Falcons with big raps after impressing in his time at Utah University. He was a big signing for the club in 1996 and his presence made Newcastle the biggest team in the league. Melmeth at 211cm and Ben Pepper (moved to North Melbourne) at 212cm gave Newcastle a very formidable 1-2 punch at the centre spot. Melmeth was considered the best of the two until Pepper was drafted into the NBA. Pepper's confidence soared and people started to rank him ahead of Melmeth. Melmeth was a member of the Gold Medal winning Australian 22 and under team that played in Melbourne earlier this year. He played a key role of the bench in that tournament and completed the season in great fashion coming second in the rookie of the year voting behind Sydney Kings Foward Matt Neilson. Melmeth played along side New Jersey Nets rookie Keith Van Horn, Melmeth was expected to stay for his senior year but opted to come back to his home town of Newcastle. He will have a much greater responsibility in 1998 with the loss of Pepper.
