PROFILE

Brett Maher has become one of the best guards in Australia. Early in his career he was stuck at the wrong end of a stacked Adelaide 36ers bench. And while he did have team success some say that hurt his developement. The limited opportunities, offensive opportunities in particlular made maher a little too unselfish. However Maher overcame his unselfishness in 1997 having his most productive season in the NBL thus far. He averaged over 20ppg and he was in the top 5 in three point percentage and free throw percentage. A lot of this was due to Dave Claxton's attitude towards Maher. He thought Maher should shoot more and take up the role as the teams leader. Maher did, playing at the two spot he had the ball coming his way on most offences, and he responded by leading the team oin scoring while still maintaning his usual standard of good team play. Maher did move back to the point guard spot but he still kept those numbers up. Maher is the understudy to former Minnesota Timberwolves guard Shane Heal in the Boomers backcourt and along with Tonny Jensen Maher wil continue Australia's recent trend of high quality guards at the international level.
