PROFILE

Clint Mcdaniel comes to the South East Melbourne Magic as a defensive specialist and one of the fastest players coming out of NCAA division 1 basketball. He was born in Tulsa Oklahoma and he played College basketball for the Arkansas Razorbacks. He won a National Championship with the Razorbacks in 1993 and he was the one who came up with many of the teams biggest plays in their biggest games. He was also one of the fastest players the team has seen and he was given the assignment of guarding the oppositions fastest guards. One of these games game in the 1994 NCAA semi finals when Mcdaniel shut down now Toronto Raptors superstar guard Damon Stoudamire. After the game Stoudamire sayed: "They just put constant pressure on you and it takes it's toll," he said."With about 10 minutes left in the game, you're just so fatigued, you're trying to suck it up...it's just kind of hard." Mcdaniel was appreciated at Arkansas but his time at College was not always so easy. He was only a regional recruit. But that suited McDaniel fine. Because ever since the fifth grade, when an elementary school gym teacher began taking him to games at the University of Tulsa, McDaniel knew he wanted to play for Nolan Richardson. Mcdaniel sat out his first season in Fayettville while he gained eligibility under proposition 48 guidelines. "It hurt me to miss that year," he recalled. "For the first time since I could remember, I didn't have any competition. It was hard when I had to get back in." Competition at Arkansas was tough. But by last year, Richardson was saying McDaniel had the potential to be the team's key defenseman. By the beginning of the 1993-94 season, he was the best. And he was expanding his repertoire. Noted Richardson: "We recruited his shooting ability and his quickness on defense. He likes playing defense now and is getting his offense back." Ah, the life of the offensive player. McDaniel tied a career high with 19 points this year aginst Tulsa. He had a season free throw percentage of .750. And before he had to sit out three games with a separated shoulder, he hit double figures eight times in 14 games. "I don't like people to score on me," McDaniel says of his defensive play. But it looks now like he's moving in on scoring against others. McDaniel is fast. With his speed, it shoudn't take long.
