Kevin Brooks will return to Adelaide and play the first month for free.

Kevin Brooks Return's to Adelaide

Posted: Fri Sep 8, 1998 at 10:46 AM ET

The Adelaide 36ers will announce today that championship winning foward Kevin Brooks wil return for the Sixers championship defence when the Summer season commences next month. Brooks, who's agent had already lined up lucrative contracts in Italy and South America, had already been given up on by the club, who went ahead with negotiations with Boomer and former 36er Paul Rodgers. Rodgers may well be left without an NBL club after the other candidates for Rodgers signature made significant signings over the past week. The Perth Wildcats filled their second import spot with Chancellor Nichols, the Woolongong Hawks signed AIS standout David Anderson, and the West Sydney Razorbacks (the other main contender for Rodger's services) signed import big man Ernest Nzigamasabo.

Originally the 36ers, and coach Phil Smyth had expected Brooks to miss the first month of the season due to salary cap restrictions. "The bottom line was, to get Kevin back here, instead of having him for six months, let's have him for five and that way, we could afford him," Smyth said. But Brooks shocked the 36ers, and his agent, by announcing that he would play the first month of the Mitsubishi Challenege for no pay so that the 36ers could fit him under the cap. Even more suprising was that it was Brooks who contacted Smyth wanting to return. The 36ers will go with a big and strong frount vourt next season, with Kevin Brooks, David Stiff, Martin Cattalini and Paul Ress all commanding court time.
