Rucker may miss Season Opener

The West Sydney razorbacks may be without star import Derek Rucker for their first ever NBL match when they clash with cross town rivals the Sydney Kings on October 10. Rucker, who joined the Razorbacks after seeking a release from the Townsville Suns, injured his calf muscle while making a sharp turn to the left in the Razorbacks pre season match vs the Townsville Crocs in Toowoomba last Friday night. Although Rucker was well backed up in Toowoomba by young West Sydney guards Leigh Carlson and Ben Arkell, the Razorbacks will be hping for a quick recovery. "Derek could miss the first game of the season unless something miraculous happens," West Sydney general manager Robbie Cadee said. "You can't rush calf injuries. We'll just have to do our best."

The Razorbacks still managed to win both of their games in Toowoomba. It was the innagural University of Southern Queensland National Basketball League birthday classic, part of the Toowoomba carnival of flowers. The Razorbacks had an easy first up game against the Crocs, despite the first half injury of Rucker. Things were much tougher in the final though, with the Woolongong Hawks leading by as much as 18 thanks largely to Clayton Ritter and C.J Bruton. But the young Razorbacks bench managed to rally and come up with the win 96-91, Simon Dwight top scoring for the Razorbacks with 18 while C.J Bruton had 23 for the Hawks. In the third-fourth play off, Rob Rose his a game winning bank shot with 0.7 left to give the Crocs an 85-83 win over the sub par Bullets. Andrew Goodwin to scored for the Crocs with 20, whle for Brisbane Steve Woodberry played a lone hand with 34.
