Major Dates in the Production of FLASH MAYNARD

Circa April 1967: Randy, Richard, and Bill spend some time in the F Street corridor of downtown Washington DC to film the exciting chase scenes between Flash Maynard and Flatus. Much of this involved waiting around for the US Postal Service to grant permission to film in the famous clock tower at 12th and Pennsylvania Avenue. The fact that when additional footage had to be shot later in the year and did not exactly match the original footage did not seem to bother anyone. Also filmed around this time was the sequence with Flash and his girlfriend, played by Elayne Danielson. Circa May 1967: Randy, Richard, Jim Lose, and Bill go to the Georgetown, Washington DC waterfront and old stone house to film the famous "chasing Ape" sequence. Also filmed was the scene with Sylvia Werner as the hippie girl Ethel Killapple in front of the old stone house on M Street. Also around this time, the colorful but deleted scenes of Mr. Big burning a hole in a newspaper with his cigar and the "Lincoln freeing the slaves" scene with Mike Baptiste were filmed in downtown DC and near the Pentagon. Circa September 1967: Jim Wayne goes with Randy, Richard, and Bill to work on filming some great fire escape chase sequences.

Beginning to finally finish up the filming after well over a year of working on it, we find on Saturday 21 September 1967: Randy, Richard, Jim Howard as Mr. Big, and Bill go down to the Mall in Washington DC where the now famous Viet Nam War protest was taking place. Some scenes were filmed with the protest doubling as a meeting of the Flash Maynard Fan Club. Saturday 4 November 1967: With Jim Jacobs acting as chauffer, the Nobodys in Particular go to RFK Stadium in Washington DC to film some of the climactic sequences of Flash Maynard. When the stadium manager, Mr. Mooneh, finds out that the Royal Films "equipment" consists of one hand-held 8mm camera, the entire production is thrown out on the street unceremoniously. Monday 20 November 1967: Coproducer Richard Rivera writes to a friend that "we are putting the finishing touches on and getting ready to edit." Monday 4 December 1967: An advertisement appears in a local newspaper announcing that "Flash Maynard is Coming!". Wednesday 27 December 1967: Randy, Richard, Jim Howard and Bill, in various production capacities, film the final scenes of the movie with Jan Nesseler as Cynthia Hazard. 1968: Flash Maynard is Gone! It is edited but unreleased due to financial difficulties and sits in the can for nearly twenty five years until rescued and put on video tape before the original print falls apart!

The above sunflower is symbolic of, well, absolutely nothing, as far as it relates to the film FLASH MAYNARD.  However, it would be nice in a vase on somebody's dining room table we think! Uh, oops, sorry, that really is a picture of Flatus and Flash fighting on the post office clock tower! Help meeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!
