The Star Class North American Regatta will be held at NLGYC in Hague, NY on September 26 -
October 1, 1998. Our small club is thrilled at the prospect of hosting a world class
regatta of this caliber.
The Star Class is the largest class of boats sailed in the Olympics and enjoys a huge
class membership throughout all the great sailing cities in the world. This
event is one of the most prestigious sailing regattas in North America. The regatta
draws some of the country's most well-known sailors and receives excellent media coverage
including some
of the network sports stations, most of the sailing press, and local press.
This will be the 48th Annual Star NA regatta. It began in 1939, and with the
exception of a couple of breaks in the late '30's and 40's, has been held yearly since
1952. The list of winners reads like the who's who of American sailing:
Ogilvy, Jim and Howard Lippincott (influential boat manufacturers on the east coast until
1980's), Lowell North (founder of North Sails, largest sailmaker in the world), Etchells
(the Etchells class is named after him), Tom Blackaller (the famed America's Cupper from
the St. Francis Yacht Club in SF), Bill Schoonmaker (Olympic medalist in several classes),
Stearns (of the life jacket and sailing clothing line), Dennis Conner (brought the
America's Cup home from Australia), Paul Cayard (from the St. Francis club also and just
won the Whitbread Around-the-World race in May 98), and Mark Reynolds (winner of gold and
silver medals for the US in Star Class '92 and '88, and top
finisher in '96).
This year we will host approximately 60-70 Star boats. All of the top skippers
including Reynolds, Brun, MacCausland, possibly Cayard or Conner, and others known more
prominently in star sailing circles, will
be here. Northern Lake George has been selected to host the event because of our
beautiful pristine deep water lake, excellent wind, and renown hospitality. The
eastern fleets petitioned for us to host this
event because this is their favorite club to visit. Our almost-all-volunteer club
has a 54 year history of great sailing, strong junior program (one of the most vital on
the east coast - an 8 week summer program for almost 120 kids each year - and keep in mind
we're 100 miles from ANYWHERE!), and great folks.
