Jeff Gordon fell 37 points short of defending his NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship in 1996, but the driver of Hendrick Motorsports' No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet wasn't gone from the top for long.

Gordon, 26, was once again the dominant force in NASCAR's top series, winning the second championship of his young career and once again leading the circuit with 10 wins as he became the sport's first $6 million dollar man for a single season. A big part of it came in one chunk, as he became the second driver in history to claim the Winston Million, with his August win at Darlington Raceway.

The Indiana native faced a tougher challenge at the end of the year than he might have liked, fighting off Dale Jarrett by just 14 points with his 17th-place finish in the season-ending NAPA 500.

Still, the season has to be considered a resounding success for the man who continues to establish himself as the biggest star in American motorsports. He became the second -- and final -- winner of the Winston Million in addition to his second championship in three years.

There's no reason to think 1998 will see Gordon slowing down in the slightest. Yet another year with Hendrick Motorsports' powerhouse Monte Carlos and Ray Evernham's expert guidance could well add up to yet another title for Gordon.

Gordon is known as the youngest NASCAR Winston Cup Series champion in the modern era, having achieved that distinction at age 24. He was the youngest title holder since Bill Rexford won the title at age 23 in 1950.

He began racing go-karts and quarter-midgets at age 5. In 1979 and 1981 he was the quarter-midget national champion. In 1990 he won the 1990 USAC midget championship.

In 1992 on the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division circuit he won a record 11 poles. In 1992 he made his NASCAR Winston Cup Series debut at Atlanta, qualifying 21st and finishing 31st. In 1993 he was the series' Rookie of the Year.

Gordon won his first race at Charlotte, in the Coca-Cola 600 in 1994. He followed that up by winning the inaugural Brickyard 400 A year later he won the series championship, launching him into the stratosphere reserved for the sport's brightest young stars.
