Trent Reznor:
birth.
Michael Trent Reznor was born May 17, 1965, to parents
who had both grown up in Mercer, Pennsylvania. They had
been forced by circumstance into an early marriage when
they were both in their teens. Young Michael was always
referred to by his middle name, Trent, to differentiate
him from his father, Michael Reznor, who was a commer-
cial artist and interior designer. Mother, Nancy, was
a housewife.
The first five years of Trent's life were lived against
a backdrop of the Vietnam War, the assassinations of
Robert Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr., the fierce
race riots in detroit, the Manson family murders, the
landing on the Moon, and the divorce of his parents.
Trent has a younger sister, Tera, who is five years
younger. Shortly after her birth, Trent and Tera's par-
ents split up and Trent was sent to live with his mater-
nal grandparents. Though his sister was not far away,
and they still got together regularly, the young Trent
never shared a family household. His experience of
childhood was much as it would have been if he were an
only child. Bill Clark, his grandfather, was a furna-
ure salesman who enjoyed taking Trent on cane-pole
fishing trips.
