My Roleplaying Life

A hobby that has changed my life- well, it's taken up some otherwise boring time.

• RPG's have been around since the early 1970's, starting with Dungeons and Dragons, by Gary Gygax
• Since then, they have matured and changed until the current market of today, with hundreds of different ones. (Just do a search on the Web, and see !)
• Many different people play these games, for many different reasons. Usually, it's a good laugh, but it can be an interesting tool for self-discovery.
• A Role-playing game can be described as a cross between Free-form theatre and 'Let's Pretend' with rules.
• Typically, a group of between three and six get together around a table with pens, paper, dice and food. One is the Referee, or ref, and has written the outline of the plot for the game. The rest are players, who act out the roles they have themselves chosen, within the confines of the background of the game (for instance, they could be FBI agents, or a band of mercenaries).
• The game proceeds along the rough guidelines laid down by the ref. The Players get to inject a lot of creative juices, so the game may not progress down the line the ref thought it might...
• There is no 'winner' or 'loser' in the game. The group of characters usually act together, and they win or lose as a group...but like in real life, little victories can be won...

• Vampire, The Masquerade: You get to run around and eat people.
• Changeling, The Dreaming: Recaptured Childhood...this has inspired me...
  But it goes without saying, the World Of Darkness stuff is the best....
