2001 was a thrilling year for North Star Stables and its horses. Aside from taking home numerous Eclipse Awards, our horses captured some of the world's greatest horse races.

The Two-Year-Olds
The Secret (Wild Secret x Fire the Groom) was at the head of the two-year-old class, going undefeated in seven impressive wire-to-wire starts. He capped off his year with a dominating victory in the Hollywood Futurity after winning the Breeders' Cup Juvenile with equal ease. Not since his sire, Wild Secret, can we remember such a dominating, effortless juvenile. He was justly awarded the eclipse for top two-year-old colt.

Shining Cherokee (Cherokee Run x Shining Light) headed the two-year-old fillies in a wider open division than the two-year-old colts. Her effortless score in the Debutante had everyone watching her, and she affirmed their faith with victories in the Frizette and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, earning her the eclipse for champion two-year-old filly.

Make Me Charismatic (Charismatic x Make Smoke) made a late bid for juvenile fillies honors with a win in the Hollywood Starlet, another grade one to add to her resume that already includes the grade one Oak Leaf Stakes. Unfortunately her flop in the Juvenile Fillies denied her the eclipse votes.

Three-Year-Olds
Boldly Blue (Bluebird x Boldly Charming) was easily the most impressive of all the three-year-old colts of the year. The handsome homebred colt powered home in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, as well as capturing the Jockey Club Gold Cup over eventual Breeders' Cup Classic one-two finishers Silver Thunder and Wild About You. He was rewarded with the champion three-year-old colt title.

Shetan (Shuailaan x Somethingdevilish) had an erratic year, but he showed up when it counted the most, capturing the Preakness Stakes in near-track record time.

Danny Boy (Mister Baileys x Serenade) outran all expectations when he ran third in the Breeders' Cup Mile after discovering his passion for the turf and a mile distance.

Glacken King (Smoke Glacken x King Snake) found his passion this year as well, discovering a love for a mile on the dirt and defeating top older horses in the Cigar Mile at the end of the year to snag the champion miler eclipse.

Midnightinthegardenofgoodandevil (Thunder Gulch x Nightlong) was a huge success story this year, after winning the Wood Memorial, running 2nd in the Derby and then finishing up the year well with victories against older horses as the heavyweight in a pair of handicaps.

Rainy Day Redwood (Forestry x Summertime Showers) was clearly one of the best horses running this year. The unassuming but fire-breathing filly captured the North Star Derby and Belmont Stakes as well as knocking off champion Boldly Blue in the Travers Stakes. She also took on the best of the best in the Haskell Invitational and Super Derby, before finishing a troubled but game third in the Breeders' Cup Classic behind dual champions Silver Thunder and Wild About You. She was rewarded with the eclipse for champion three-year-old filly.

Enchanted Forest (Forestry x Alexandrina) helped Forestry have a spectacular season by capturing three consecutive stakes (two grade ones) at a mile and an eighth before finishing a strong second in the Breeders' Cup Distaff. This spectacular filly really should have won an eclipse for her domination of the filly/mare division, but unfortunately she was born in the same year as Rainy Day Redwood.

Tabasco Queen (Tabasco Cat x Queen of Millbrook) proved to be the best three-year-old turf horse running. During her huge streak of wins she defeated eventual Breeders' Cup Turf winner Galileo and captured three grade ones. Pretty impressive for an opinionated filly like her.

Older Horses
Silver Thunder (Thunder Gulch x Silver Lining) heads to stud this year, but he is deserving of a luxurious stud career. The outstanding son of Thunder Gulch captured the Breeders' Cup Classic and his second consecutive older male eclipse award.

War Admiral (Man O' War x Back In Time) also heads to stud this year, but he to enters stud with some impressive accomplishments, including the Breeders' Cup Sprint and the eclipse for champion sprinter.

Wild About You (Wild Again x Mad About You) headed an outstanding cast of older mares with victories over males in the Suburban and Woodward. The previous year's Breeders' Cup Classic winner also takes home the older female award.

Northern Exposure (Cozy Run x Northern Fairy) was yet another outstanding homebred mare who capped off her impressive multiple eclipse award winning career with a second consecutive Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf victory over rubber match rival Shakespeare in Love. Northern Exposure heads to the breeding shed this year, but her exploits on the track will long be remembered.

Smokene (Smoke Glacken x Cozzene's Fate) got off to a rough start at the beginning of the year, but last year's Preakness winner and champion three-year-old filly in two games wasn't about to be denied an eclipse this year. She rallied strongly in summer to capture three consecutive handicaps, two of them grade ones before finishing second against fillies in the Beldame. This is a filly who despises running against fillies, so her performance in the Beldame wasn't surprising for a filly who wasn't putting her whole self into the race. Her exploits in the handicap ranks against the boys earned her the champion handicap female title.

At the end of the year, North Star Stables had some impressive awards and victories to its name, including Knickers - Trainer of the Year and North Star Stables - Breeder of the Year, as well as Serenade - Broodmare of the Year.

Rainy Day Redwood is one of many top
Thoroughbred that ran under the NSS banner
in 2001.
