Joseph Northup was b. in 1665 in North Kingston, Washington Co. RI, the son of Stephen and Elizabeth (Harrington) Northup He married Hopestill Smith (Abt. 1695 in South Kingstown, Washington Co., Rhode Island, daughter of JOHN SMITH and PHILLIPPA GEREARDY. She was born 1669 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., Rhode Island, and died 1726), and they had at least nine children. The first, Joseph apparently died in infancy and they later named a second son Joseph.
