Varnum J. Northup was born 4 Mar.1840 Italy, Yates Co. NY, the son of Needham Northup III and Miranda (Mary) Rounds. He married 31 Aug. 1861 Penn Yan, Yates Co. NY. Miss Irene Davis and had one son. He fought in the Civil War and was Listed as missing June 17, 1864 at Petersburg, VA. 179 NY regiment ref. AGR records.
Bernard J. Tompsett says: "Varnum J. Northup b. 4 Mar., 1840; Italy, Yates Co. NY. Listed as missing June 17, 1864 at Petersburg, VA. 179 NY regiment ref. AGR records. Married 31 Aug. 1861 Penn Yan, Yates Co. NY. Miss Irene Davis. Children; Edwin Varnum Northup. Father of Varnum; Needham Northup. Mother; Maranda (Mary) Rounds."
Tina Fenton Gilbert says: "I am almost positive Vander and Varnum are the same person. Vander was taken prisoner and died at Andersonville Prison. Was married to Sabra Stoddard, they had at least two children Sarah, and Eugene who was my G,G Grandfather. Vander died on Aug. 23, 1865 at Andersonville Prison, he lived in Pultney NY Steuben County." Tina is wrong here. On the 1855 Steuben County Census, Varnum Northup is listed as a son of Needham, 16 yrs old. Vander Northrup; 33 is listed separately with wife, Sabra Stoddard and one daughter, Sarah Ann; age 7. Eli II Northrup is also listed at age 38. These could be brothers, sons of Eli I Northrup. (Note Spelling.)
