Willamette High School   Wolverine Invitational

Dec. 7-8, 2001

Willamette High School welcomes you back to the annual Wolverine Invitational on Friday and Saturday, December 7-8 2001. As you can tell, we have expanded our tournament this year to two days, with three of the guaranteed five preliminary debate rounds occurring on Friday. Additionally, Cross-Examination Debate will be offered this year as a regular tournament event. Some of you might remember last year’s “separate tournament” for policy debaters. Not so this time. Policy folks may enter IE’s. For those students entered only in IE’s, however, not much has changed. There will still be a guaranteed three preliminary rounds with a final round predicted for most events.

This is a pretty straight-forward tournament, but we run some things a little differently at Willamette. Please read the following packet carefully for all the important tournament information and deadlines. If you have any questions or concerns, please call or email. Email is best, however, as I am a compulsive email checker, and am notorious for forgetting to check phone messages....

Students may enter only one event per pattern. Also, extempers should not enter a pattern A event, as extemp prep is run during this time. Please don’t overlook this....

Take I-5 to Beltline (exit 195 B). Take Beltline to Barger (exit #5). Left on Barger (back under the overpass) to Echo Hollow Road (Albertson’s supermarket will be on the right). Take Echo Hollow Road one block to the High School. Go past Dove Lane and take the first entrance on the left. Also, see the handy dandy maps!

Food and Drink:

Willamette High School is directly across the street from a grocery store and several eateries.

A Word to Competitors About Judges:

Those who have never organized a speech tournament are sometimes very glib in their criticism of the ones they attend. This is especially true when it comes to judges. While we will do what we can to see that judges are appropriately placed, students should prepare themselves to compete in front of a variety of volunteers with a broad range of experience. Please understand that judges, experienced and inexperienced, are what make a tournament happen. No judges, no tournament, no high school forensics.

The judges at Willamette will be made up largely of parents and teachers, college students, former competitors, interested and energetic community volunteers. Occasionally, in a novice round, a senior-division competitor might even fill in in a pinch. Whatever the case, please show our judges, without whom forensics could not exist, the respect and gratitude they deserve.

Motel Information:

There are few decent motels near Willamette High School. The best place to stay is approximately five miles from the tournament site at one of the motels near the junction of Beltline and I-5. Coaches should avoid motels along Hwy 99 (also West 6th St.). They are closer to the school, but are in a questionable area. Generally, motels along Gateway Street (technically in Springfield) are a good bet for lodging, and are a short freeway drive to Willamette. Here are a few phone numbers:

It will be important to book rooms somewhat early. Although we’ve managed to miss conflicting with the Civil War football game, rooms in Eugene get booked notoriously fast. Additionally, if rooms in the Eugene area are scarce, it might help to try Junction City, which is only ten or twelve miles away....
