Preston Walker was the publisher of the GJT Daily Sentinel newspaper in 1959 and on the Board.
The 1972 magazine article clearly says he died May 28, 1971 while rafting so I'm using that date.
The SSDI shows Mar 1971 which may be a typo or another person.
And the following article says he died in 1970.

Swift Newspapers adds Free Press to its roster

GRAND JUNCTION - Swift Newspapers Inc. has added the 20-month-old Grand Junction Free Press to its growing list of newspaper properties, 
which now includes six dailies and seven weeklies in Colorado.
The sale was made public in the Free Press on Tuesday in a news release issued by the company 
and in an editorial column by the new publisher, longtime Colorado newspaperman Bob Lombardi. 
The Free Press staff was informed of the change Monday afternoon.	
Founding Free Press publisher John Duffy is no longer with the newspaper. 
His partners in starting the venture, which printed its first edition May 19, 2003, are Bob Wilson and Chan Edmonds, both of Mesa County.
A consultant to the new paper has been Ken Johnson, former editor of The (Grand Junction) Daily Sentinel 
who inherited that paper in 1970 upon the sudden death of sole owner Preston Walker. 
Johnson later sold The Daily Sentinel to Cox Enterprises of Atlanta.   -http://72.14.207.104
