Arranmore is an island off the coast of Donegal, Ireland. It has a population of around 700, and during the summer months, this figure easily doubles.
The Island has much to offer it's visitors. It's rugged beauty, it's beaches and cliffs, are a sight savoured by many a visitor. The cliffs are on the Atlantic facing side of the island, where some of the views quite literally, take your breath away.
On the sheltered, inhabited side of the island, is a nest of small beaches, each one individual, serene, some even tranquil. It is in some of these bays and small inlets, that you will find the clearest and most inviting waters.
Sea angling is a tradition, and a must for all visiting. Ask around for someone to take you out on a summers day. There are a vast species of fish to be caught from the rocks, and in the shallow waters surrounding the island. Of course, rainbow and brown trout are regularly stocked in the lakes of Arran, and make a savory dish to whet anyones appetite.
If fishing isn't your thing, there are many walks along the coast and cliffs of the island, albeit the majority of them pass by a pub or two, somewhere along the way.
As the end of the summer draws near, the festival spirit takes over. An annual event, usually held during the first week of August is a huge attraction. The festival usually lasts a full week, with high point of the week being the final day, when the regatta is held. Locals, and some from further afield, compete in events from sailing and rowing, to shovelling sand and arm wrestling.
This picture above was taken in November 1997 of Aphort bay. Looking out over this bay, is O' Donnell's Atlantic Bar, with Hughie and Pam behind the bar.Take a call in to see them all there sometime, and have a pint by the fire. The locals are friendly, if your buying, and there's usually something happening by way of entertainment.
