A Christian’s Application of the Poem:

“MARY HAD A LITTLE LAMB”

By: Missionary Dr. Phillip R. Allen

Shortly after I was saved (September 1964), the Lord showed me some spiritual truths in the poem “Mary had a little lamb” which really blessed my heart, and which I trust, will be a blessing to you.

“Mary had a little lamb,
Its fleece was white as snow;
And everywhere that Mary went
The lamb was sure to go.
It followed her to school one day,
That was against the rule;
It made the children laugh and play
To see a lamb at school.
And so the teacher turned it out,
But still it lingered near,
And waited patiently about
Till Mary did appear.
“Why does the lamb love Mary so?”
The eager children cry,
“Why, Mary loves the lamb you know”
The teacher did reply.

Mary, is the name of the mother of our precious Lord Jesus Christ. “And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God. And, behold, thou shalt call his name Jesus.”Luke 1:30, 31.

Jesus, is the name of the Lamb of God. The fulfillment of all the Old Testament types. “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”John 1:29.

Fleece white as snow, reminds me of the cleansing Blood of Jesus which cleanses our sins as white as snow. “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” Isaiah 1:18.

Everywhere that Mary went. This excites me to want to confess Jesus everywhere I go. “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 10:32.

The Lamb was sure to go. Where ever we go, Jesus has promised to go with us. Read Psalm 23. ”Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen,” Matthew 28:19, 20.

Followed Mary to school. Take Jesus to school with you, young people. “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16.

Against the rule. A well known woman atheist of the United States, has caused the supreme court to rule against prayer and Bible reading in public schools. Understand that it is every person’s responsibility to obey the laws of man, that is, unless they are in direct contradiction to the word of God. We are to obey God rather than man. (I published this material in tract form in 1969-70. Today, 30 years later, we all can see the results of such a terrible mistake),

Children laugh and play. Some may ridicule and make fun of your testimony for Jesus Christ, but remember, they made fun of our precious Lord. “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” II Timothy 3:12.

Teacher turned the little lamb out. Many public schools, as well as many local churches have turned Jesus out.

Still the lamb lingered near, and waited patiently about.“Behold, I (Jesus) stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” Revelation 3:20. “…him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.”John 6:37b

Why do I love Jesus so?“We love him, (Jesus), because he first loved us.” I John 4:19.

There is a precious song that tells the old, old story of Jesus and His love - - “O How I Love Jesus.” The prophecy of the Suffering Savior found in Isaiah 53 is fulfilled in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Dear reader, are you saved? Do you know where you would go if you were to die this very hour? What are you trusting to get you to heaven when you die? Is it church membership, baptism in water, or your good works? These will never get you to heaven. Only faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ on Calvary will get you or anyone else to heaven.

“Ye, (you dear reader) must be born again.” John 3:7b. To be “born again” you must believe the gospel of Jesus Christ as the apostle Paul preached it. “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”I Corinthians 15:3, 4. You must believe the gospel in your heart, not only with your head.

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”Romans 10:9, 10

“Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever.” I Peter 1:23

“Of his own will begat (born) he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.”JAMES 1:18

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8, 9.

"God's Only Plan of Salvation"

One afternoon while in the downtown area of Atlanta, GA. I sat down on a park bench beside a young man about 25 years old. I struck up a conversation with him by asking. "Have you ever been saved?" He seemed a bit puzzled as he turned to face me and answered my question with another question. "Saved from what?" He asked. I realized he was serious and not making a joke out of my question. So I went on to explain the only plan that God has given to us for the salvation of our soul.

I wish I could report that this young man had trusted Jesus as his own personal Savior. But at that moment he did not. Hopefully he did at a later time. At least he listened respectfully, to what I had to say.

I am concerned about the lack of knowledge and understanding of this so very important subject, especially in America, a so called, "Christian nation." Just get outside the church area, in the public places, and ask a few people about salvation and you will soon see what I mean.

The Bible, is God's Holy Word. It is our only trustworthy resource to find the answer to my question. Better yet, this question has been asked by many down through the generations of time.

There was a jailer who lived with his family in the chief city of Philippi, a colony of Macedonia. It so happened that he was obligated by his superiors to lock up two preachers of the gospel. During the course of the night, soon after midnight, the jailer was compelled to ask these two preachers, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

The "good news" following this experience was that the jailer and his family were saved, and followed the Lord in believer's baptism. That's not all, they along with a lady called Lydia and a young woman who was a former fortune teller, all trusted Jesus Christ as their Savior, and became the first members of the first Bible believing church in their city. This account can be found in the Bible, Acts 16.

Someone has said the plan of salvation is as simple as ABC. And it is, but it must be heard, understood and accepted or believed. The gospel can be presented from many parts of the Bible, God's Holy Word.

Many use the well-known presentation called "The Roman Road" to salvation. Which uses Bible verses found exclusively in the book of Romans. The truth is, a soul winner may use many other Scripture references to lead a soul to put his trust in the living Savior Jesus Christ.

Basically, one needs to hear the FACTS, believe those facts as the very Words of God, this is called FAITH. And their acting upon these will produce a change on the inside and results in FEELINGS. One's reaction to the salvation experience will depend upon his emotional make up. Every person has a personality and emotionally reacts to or responds to experiences in a different way.

But whether there are feelings or not, there must be the presentation of the FACTS. (The facts involve the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ). Then there must be FAITH in those facts. Repentance needs also to be presented. It is simply turning from the wrong direction and start in the right direction.

Above all, the working power of the Holy Spirit of God in the presentation of the Gospel of Christ, is a must in the conversion of any dear soul who hears the salvation message. He, the Holy Spirit, uses The Word of God to "quicken", or make alive, bring from the dead, those who believe.

Yes, the fact is that sinners are "dead in trespasses and sins", according to the Scriptures. Our pleading with sinners is necessary, with compassion, but the conversion of the lost takes place as the Holy Spirit, gives faith and repentance to the "hearer" that "will" receive the Lord Jesus as his own personal Savior.

Look at God’s Simple Plan of Salvation in 5 Steps

1. You must realize the condition of your Soul. You have sinned. All are sinners. Who is good? Who has sinned? Where did sin come from? Romans 3:10 says: “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:” Other references: Ro. 3:10-12; 5:12; Eph. 2:12 & Luke 18:13

2. Another thing you must do is recognize the condemnation of your soul because of sin. See God’s price on sin. Ro. 6:23a “For the wages of sin is death,…” See also: Jn. 3:17-21; Heb. 9:27; Lk. 16:22, 23 & Rev. 20:11-15

3. The 3rd thing you must do is repent concerning your sins. This is our way out. Ro. 5:8 says: “But God commended his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” See also: Lk. 13:3; At. 3:19; I Thess. 1:9; Luke 11:32 & Ro. 6:6, 11, 2

4. The next thing you must do is regard Jesus Christ as God’s only means of Salvation. Not only is He our way out, He is our ONLY way out. Ro. 10:13 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved”. See Acts 4:10-12; 2:21 & John 1:29

5. Finally, you must receive, by faith, Jesus Christ as your own personal Savior. Take God at His Word
and claim His promise for your salvation.. Ro. 10:9-11 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness: and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

The question in Acts 16:30 “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” The answer in Vs. 31 “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved….”

Now you can pray, talk to God; confess to Him that you are a sinner, and ask Him to save you as He has promised, and by faith, receive Christ as your Savior. And now I want to tell you how you can know you are saved. Read I Jn. 5:9-12, but I will give you Vs. 13 “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” Take God at His Word, believe! Get it settled! No need to doubt!

If you have prayed the sinners prayer and trusted Jesus Christ as your Savior, would you be willing to confess Him before men? Would you write or call me, or email me and let me know? Perhaps sign my guestbook and tell me about your decision. I will try to help you even more. You will find all the information you need to contact me or my pastor and church on this web site. Do let us hear from you.
