TOM HUNT, my great-great-great grandfather, was listed in slavery on the Thomas HUNT and the Goodwyn HUNT plantations. He was listed as belonging to Thomas HUNT and handed down to Goodwyn in the 1759 will (transcribed below, received from cousin Elwood Stith). He was set free from Goodwyn re: Goodwyn Hunt Last Will & Testament probated in Sussex Co., VA, 1792. Copy in Will Book "E" at pg. 144. (source: Gary Williams, Clerk of Court, Sussex Co., VA.) Below is the will transcribed in its entirety. ________________________________________________________________ THOMAS HUNT LAST WILL & TESTAMENT, 1759 Will of Thomas HUNT Sussex County, VA (WB A/138-141) Will dated 14 Aug 1757; proved 21 Sep 1759 . . . to son John two Negroes Jack and Gaby. . . . to son Thomas two Negroes Arthur and Aaron . . . to my son Judkins two Negroes Moses and Potter . . . my will is that my said son Judkins be bound to a Joyner and his Negro Boy Moses be bound to a House Carpenter by my Executor at the age of fifteen. . . . my will that my Executors to sell young Brown Bess and money laid out for schooling for said son Judkins . . . my will is that my Executors bind out one of my son THOMAS's negroes to a House Carpenter, Arthur . . . give my daughter Ann Hunt three Negroes Suky, Mossy, and Anthony . . . to my daughter Elizabeth Hunt three Negroes Pegg, Hannah and Darcus . . . to my daughter Sally Hunt two Negroes Terrico and Amy . . . Robin which I give to my son Judkins to keep the mill and I desire that he always be kept as a Miller. 1 Jul 1759 Codicil to my L.W.&T...give to my son Goodwin two Negroes one named Anthony and the other named TOM ....to youngest daughter Susan two Negroes Portibus and Friday ___________________________________________________________________ GOODWYN HUNT LAST WILL & TESTAMENT, 1792 IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN. I, GOODWYN HUNT of Sussex County, being weak and infirm of body, but of sound mind and memory, blessed be God for the same, do ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following----Infirmed, I commend my soul to God, cheerfully, hoping to share a part in the first resurrection thru' Jesus Christ to whom be praise for ever and ever. Item. It is my desire that my executor here after named, shall raise out of my estate a sufficiency to satisfy all just demands that may come against it, after the same is finally settled. I desire that my negroes, ANTHONY and TOM, both carpenters by trade, be finally and entirely at liberty from me and my heirs forever. Item. It is my desire that PEGG, a Negro Girl about twelve years of age, should remain under the direction of my executor till she arrives to the age of twenty one. Then it is my further desire that she should have her liberty in full, as the others - she and her heirs forever. Item. I desire that the tools which TOM and ANTHONY laboured with should be their undoubted property after my debts are satisfied. Item. It is my desire that after my affairs are all settled and debts paid, I give and bequeath the remainder to my executor for his trouble in settling the same. It is my desire that my estate be not praised (?). Item. I nominate and appoint by brother, THOMAS HUNT, executor to this last will and testament. In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and affixed seale this twentieth day of July, one thousand seven hundred and ninety two. Signed and sealed and delivered in the presence of: GOODWYN HUNT (seal) SAM'L GILLIAM THOMAS HUNT, JUN. LUCY HUNT CARL ATIESAL (?) Goodwyn Hunt's will Sept. 6th, 1792 was probated by 2 witnesses, Executor qualified and OK. Recorded and examined. At a court heretofor Sussex County, the 6th day of September 1792. The within written last will and testament of GOODWYN HUNT, dec'd, was presented into court by THOMAS HUNT, the executor therin named. The same was proved by the oaths of SAMUEL GILLIAM & THOMAS HUNT________(?). I ordered to be recorded and upon the motion of the executor, who made oath and gave bond. Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form. Teste M. Bailey - C.C. _____________________________________________________ BILLY HUNT, my great-great grandfather, is listed in the "Register of Free Negroes and Mulattoes for Sussex Co., VA; 1800-1850" His description is as follows: BILLY HUNT, yellow, 5' 5 1/8", freeborn, no visible marks or scars, 28 years old. Register #679, dated 12/1/31. Three (3) brothers are listed with him as being freeborn. They are Sandy, Matthew, & Charles. (Information supplied by Sussex Co., Clerk of Courts - Gary Williams). _________________________________________________________ FRANCES, my great-great grandmother, was born in slavery on the Thomas Hunt plantation. Listed in the settlement of estate inventory of Thomas Hunt, SR., who died testate in 1811. Frances was transferred to Wilkins J. Hunt for his proportion along with other slaves Hartwell, Adam, & Jane. (source: through Linda Stith Threadgill from Gary Williams, Sussex Co. clerk of Courts.) No documentation has been recovered listing the marriage date of BILLY and FRANCES. _________________________________________________________ JAMES EDWARD HUNT and JOSEPHINE WASHINGTON, my great grandparents, had their marriage license issued in Sussex County, Virginia on Jan. 5, 1888. Marriage was performed on Jan. 11, 1888, Sussex County, Virginia. JAMES is listed as 27 years old and JOSEPHINE is listed as 21 years old; birthplace and residence of both are listed as Sussex County. Parents of JAMES are Billy & Frances(?) Hunt. Parents of JOSEPHINE are Matthew & Emmaline (spelled Emalou in official registry) Washington. They were married in the home of Tom Washington by William Bassett. James is listed as a farmer. Clerk of Courts is listed as Jno. D. Owen. This information is in the Sussex Co., VA Marriage Register, 1865-1901, pg. 51, line 102 (info) supplied by Gary Williams, Clerk of Court, Sussex Co., VA The 1910 Federa Census conducted in the Drewryville District provided this: James C. Hunt, 50 year old widow, Mulatto; a General Farmer. Living in his household was: George T., 19, son; Charlie, 17, son; James C., 15, son; Mattie I., 13,daughter; Emmett H., 11, daughter; Emma, 7, daughter. Seven children were noted as living. All the children were listed as mulatto. George T. worked in the sawmill. __________________________________________________ The marriage license of JAMES CLAUDE HUNT and ROBERTA STITH , my grandparents, lists James as Claudia . JAMES was known by his middle name, CLAUDE. The license was issued on Dec.22, 1917 by H.B. McLemore, Clerk, Southampton County, Virginia. Marriage was performed by W. T.Whitfield, minister of the Morning Star Baptist Church on Dec. 26, 1917. JAMES is 22 years old at the time of his marriage and ROBERTA is 17. Both listed as residing in Southampton Co., VA. ________________________________________________________________ My parents are WILLIAM THOMAS HUNT and DOROTHY PAULINE DAVENPORT. They were united in marriage on November 9, 1946 at the home of James and Viola Martin, Beesonworks, Pa. WILLIAM was born in Newport News, VA on January 25,1920; passed away on September 26, 1980. DOROTHY was born on November 9, 1924; passed away on March 25, 1999. DOROTHY’S parents are Robert Charles Davenport and Emma Thompson (both deceased).
