Hi, my name is Pete. I'm 36, and have spinal muscular atrophy (a condition related to muscular dystrophy). I am married to the lovely Lelia, and we live in a village near Maidstone, England. Maidstone is the county town of Kent. It is an OK place to live, but needs MORE scifi shops! I tend to get most of my scifi stuff from W.H. Smiths, who are very helpful.
Being disabled, I have what are known as "carers", who are people who come to my home and help with things like getting me up in the morning, washing, dressing, and they take me out shopping, turn me at night and generally help me with the chores of life. They are Shirley, Judie, Jeff, Susie and Theresa.
About my illness:
From the Muscular Dystrophy Handbook.
Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
This may closely resemble Muscular Dystrophy and is often mistaken for it.
The muscle becomes weak because of the loss of some of the nerve cells in the spinal cord which control the muscle contraction. This is a very variable disorder ranging from a severe progressive illness in babies under 1 year, which is usually fatal (Werdnig Hoffman Disease) ( This is the one I have) to a much milder disorder of late childhood and adult life (Kugekberg Welander Disease).
Characteristically the milder cases have long periods in which the disorder does not deteriorate. Some cases with signs of the disease from early infancy follow this pattern and may be quite severely disabled, but show no worsening of their condition for 20 years or more.
The inheritance is variable, but there is a considerable risk that brothers or sisters of some cases may become affected.
No Curative treatment is known.

(CAROLE), ONE BROTHER IN LAW (NICK), FOUR NEPHEWS (DANIEL, MATTHEW, BEN AND LOUIS), ONE NIECE (ZENA) ONE GREAT NIECE (HOPE), MUM (JANET) AND DAD (DAVID), PLUS TWO CATS, "KIRA" & "FAT CAT" OR "MOOGIE". "FAT CAT" IS GINGER AND WHITE, "KIRA" IS A LONG HAIR TABBY CAT WITH A TEMPER JUST LIKE HER NAMESAKE MAJOR KIRA IN DEEP SPACE NINE. MUM LIKES TO CALL "FAT CAT" BY ANOTHER NAME, SHE CALLS HIM..."PEACE"...YUK!, SILLY NAME FOR A CAT. HE IS ABOUT 15-19 YEARS OLD, "KIRA" IS 6-7 YEARS OF AGE. THE CATS SORT OF GET ON WELL BUT HAVE THE ODD FIGHT!.
I have many friends I met online, some of whom are dear to me. I met my wife in this group, and I have PDE to thank for that.
